Public art has been a feature of the campus landscape at the University of Leeds since the early 20th century. It is a type of art that has been designed for the public realm and can be executed in any media. Generally displayed outdoors, it is designed to be accessible and enjoyed by anyone. At the University of Leeds, these works have been variously commissioned or purchased thanks to both private and public funds.

Through six works, this exhibition explores the history of public art located on the University of Leeds campus, from the early 20th century to the present day. It asks why each work was commissioned or purchased for the University and what they tell us about campus specific art and its cultural implications. Stories behind these works of public art and their relation to the progression of the University throughout its development are revealed. In many cases, the artworks have remained unchanged but they have been relocated to different sites around the campus. This shows the ability of public art to adapt to campus and acquire new meanings as the life of the University and its staff and students has progressed.
