1. Expectations are set high between all relationships. Respect is very visible.
2. The teachers are proud of their jobs and with that energy they have created a special place for students to feel safe, learn, and have opportunities that most kids do not have. The adults did this together for the kids.
3. There is no room for complacency. The atmosphere is purposeful, the lessons are engaging, energy of students is used to create power that energy is not squashed but channeled into sound, music, and movement.

1. Lessons are hands-on, interactive, collaborative, and real-world centered in every subject.
2. Students are celebrated on a regular basis. They are celebrated by their peers, their families, and their teachers. They work hard, but they play hard too.
3. Students are given a well-rounded education...not just an academic education. They are taught to communicate properly with peers and adults, how to shake-hands, how to interview, how to present themselves in public, etc. These students leave Ron Clark ready to take on any challenge. They are confident in themselves and excited about the future!

1. Students were not fearful, of adults or their peers, even when they were given “constructive” criticism. Constant celebration of success.

2. Respect is expected and commanded, not demanded.

3. Stand to speak. Student's presence was felt, not only seen.

4. The décor added to the magic but was not the focus of it. The pictures on the walls told a story. They showed the overwhelming love and respect of the kids and put the school culture on display.

5. LOUD. Students were always talking, signing, dancing, and drumming but were on task.

6. Most classes moved at a rapid-fire pace so there was no time for down time.

7. Teachers worked as a team. Everyone was on the same page and their focus was the kids.

8. Going on trips/outings with the students outside of the typical fieldtrip.

9. The trust and bond between students and teachers was extremely high.

We think that the incoming sixth graders need to attend the first day of school by themselves, this way we can explain the house system to them, and they can be sorted into their houses. we think that it would be best if the students could have buy in if they were able to randomly select their houses by choosing an envelope that had their house name, the chant, and their home room teacher. at that point they can go to that home room teacher and begin their day, and in each period, we could teach them a big chunk of the essential 55 things that are going to be expectations instead of rules. Clearly, we know that not all 55 are going to be things that we will need or use in our school. However, Plante is volunteering to come up with a plan to implement these essentials into our school for next year.

-----8th grade ambassadors are also a great idea. They can come from each of the different academies and be of EQUAL number of students from each academy. Each ambassador is responsible for being a face of the school they will reteach some of the essential 55 to the younger students, we will look to these students to be of guidance to be presenters, and leadership for specific events.

Discipline - they build a foundation of expectations and they follow through with the consequences. Teachers calmly tell a disruptive student to write their name on the board and teachers later track it on a google doc that all faculty are on. Then after so many strikes is lunch detention, next step is after school detention (sitting or standing, their choice, at the wall for an hour), and last resort is Saturday detention.

They said this was their building blocks to be able to do the fun stuff with the kids.

Oh and the kids can't speak for the first 2 weeks.

RCA New Implementations

1. The first day of school should be a welcoming celebration. DJ Davey can drops some beats, teachers wear house shirts and show house spirit, everyone is welcomed with love and positivity. Have teachers stand at their doors and we send all 7th/8th grade students to homeroom or a holding area based by house. 6th graders all go to the cafeteria and we have a sorting ceremony. I FIRMLY BELIEVE WE NEED A WHEEL. Spin the wheel, get greeted by your house leaders and let the other students celebrate them being in our house. Then, send the kids to homeroom! Get everyone in the house spirit. Teach them house cheers (which should be revamped, more on that later). Give out scheduled, do some procedure and school rules but build the moment with your kids.

2. Ask someone to make us a wheel. WE NEED A WHEEL PEOPLE.

3. Discipline. There needs to be high expectations and a huge level of commitment by staff for consistency. All admin, teacher, support staff, campus advisor etc needs to be on board and willing to participate. Students need to know the rules clearly, and every adult needs to hold them to these expectations. There needs to be a system/steps in place for disciplinary actions for students. RCA teachers have students write their names on the board and add checks which lead to various consequences. I’m not saying we should copy this, but have something similar in place to help maintain classroom management and behavior.

4. House celebrations/buy ins: house flags! Same colors and shields on the flags, and hang them in order of who is in the lead with points (even if it’s just the weekly leader). Students could be in charge of this. Ask the community for donations of snacks or lunch items such as pizza for weekly winners, change up each week so they never know what to expect but have it be something they strive to win because they know it will be cool. Have students sit with their houses every Friday to build relationships with other kids not just their friends. There should be an overall winner for the year as well as each quarter.

5. Homeroom: we need to focus more on life skills than preaching to them what they ARENT doing. Teach them the S.P.E.C.I.A.L skills such as hand shakes, eye contact, essential 55, appropriate conversations and coping skills.
