Definition: In the beginning of the story, the hero is faced with a conflict that causes them to embark on their adventure.
Example in Anthem: The call to adventure is when Equality finds the tunnel. He recognizes his need to keep his tunnel to himself and a journey is ready to begin. He states, "This place belongs to us, Equality 7-2521, and to no other men on earth. And if we ever surrender it, we shall surrender our life with it also" (Rand 34).

Definition: After accepting the quest and being
armed for its dangers, the hero is
ready to step forward toward his first
battle.
Example in Anthem: Equality crosses the threshold when he finds the tunnel and goes against the counsel's law by exploring it. This is important to the story because he is going into a world that he is unfamiliar with. He does not know what the future holds and yet he continues to go on with his journey.

Definition: This represents the final separation from the hero's known world and self. This person will show their willingness and they may encounter a little danger or setback.
Example in Anthem: Equality never wonders what he looks like and never cares about his appearance compared to his brothers. When he made/discovered light, this was the final separation from his old self. He started to feel things he's never felt before and he started to discover himself in new ways. Although his parting from his known world comes later, this is even more important because this is where Equality starts to change. The text states, "We made it. We created it. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. We alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only" (Rand 59). Equality says this after he discovers/creates light. He realizes that he is special and made something that no one has and no one will. It is his alone he just doesn't know the words for it yet (I and me). This is the first time he realized he did something himself this is the start of his changing from his previously known self.

Definition: The road of trials is the tasks and tests the hero must face throughout the journey.
Example in Anthem: After Equality discovers electricity, he decides that he must share his knowledge. However, he gets in trouble for trying and gets thrown in jail. This is where the road of trials begins. His initial detainment, the act of questioning him, and his escape from the prison are all examples of the difficulties he faces.

Definition: At this point in the quest, the hero experiences transformative and transcendent love.
Example in Anthem: Equality meets a girl and names her the Golden One. When he sees her, he immediately knows that she is special and he wants to know more about her. Equality proves this by saying, "So we looked straight upon the Golden One, and we saw the shadows of their lashes on their white cheeks and the sparks of sun on their lips. And we said: 'You are Beautiful, Liberty 5-3000.'" (Rand 42). This stage is an important one in the hero's journey because the Golden One impacts how Equality goes about his journey and he makes decisions based on how they will affect her.

Definition: The hero must confront and be initiated by whatever holds the ultimate power in their life. This is the center point of the journey.
Example in Anthem: The government holds all of the power in Equality's life. He is controlled daily by the laws he must follow and everything set in stone by the Council. When Equality breaks the rules and sees the Council to show them his creation, this is when he confronts the ultimate power in his life. After the Council does not agree with Equality's creation, he escapes by stating, "We seized our box, we shoved them aside, and we ran to the window. We turned and we looked at them for the last time, and a rage, such as it is not fit for humans to know, choked our voice in our throat. 'You fools!' we cried. 'You fools! You thrice-damned fools!'" (Rand 74-75). Saying this was Equality's way to finally get back at the Council for everything they have hidden from him. After he confronts them, he finally feels a little bit of peace and can run away.

Definition: The hero's task concludes and he earns his final reward. However, the journey is far from over as he tries to adjust to his new life.
Example in Anthem: Equality runs into the forest to escape and his final reward is when the Golden One joins him. This is because it is his way of returning to normal life. Though it is impossible for him to go back to the city and be a street sweeper, he is now living outside with the Golden One. This shows the return because he is attempting to adjust to living in the forest with the Golden One.

Definition: The hero has found a balance between his internal and external worlds and he no longer fears death.
Example in Anthem: Prometheus and the Golden One have decided to design their own society surrounding the house they found. This is because this is where they found freedom from the council and laws of having to live only for one's brother.
