Proctor: I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. .' am not that man. She is silent. My honesty is broke, Elizabeth; I am no good man. Nothings spoiled by giving them this lie that were not rotten long before.” (Pg. 136)
- In my opinion, I believed that this quote emphasized and showed how Proctor determines himself as "not a good man" based off what society has led people to believe in their community. He accepts his fate of death at the end of the story by signing and ripping up the confession that could have led him to freedom. Elizabeth understands that after his affair and acts of evil against humanity, he is finally accepting his goodness, which in this case is death (his consequence that he believes he deserves).
