In the present day, because of Settler-Colonialism, we often need to acknowledge the indigenous populations that lived on this land before us. In our definition of Settler-Colonialism, we use the words “replacement of indigenous populations and erasure of their identity”. These words give insight into how settlers would push the indigenous people out of their homes. Obviously, this was hurtful to the indigenous people. So, because of the hurt that the settlers caused long ago, we need to continue our practice of acknowledging them and their land. In order to create a safer and more inclusive, world, we think that it is necessary to recognize and admit to Settler-Colonialism.

In a way, land is life because land is necessary for life. Land means different things for different groups of people- whether it's accumulation of wealth or preservation of culture/history. Thus contests for land can be contests for life and happiness, as well as a contest for an established society. In this framework, land and people are interconnected so the domination of another's land is like the genocide of its people.

Settler colonialism is still prevalent in today's society when we think and reflect on the history of where we live and work (for example: the land that OES was built on). Additionally, although the Native Americans have already been pushed into tiny reservations across the U.S., corporations like oil companies or housing developments will still try to take that little bit of land away and use it for commercial purposes. Basically, although it looks different than it did 200 years ago, Settler- Colonialism is still occurring in the nation today.

The thinking and perspective of Settler-Colonialism persists through the normalization of settler occupation. For instance, in the United States, many indigenous lands that were claimed by settler's are still exploited for resources. It is, in essence, hegemonic; perpetuating the repression against indigenous peoples and their cultures. Today, the perspective of settler-colonialism has less of an impact than it has had in the past, but its effects on specific cultures is still clearly evident and continues to shape the way that these demographics are treated.

Similar to colonialism, settler-colonialism usually involves an attempt at total control of a region of land. This involves techniques such as shaping the landscape to make it more familiar, and forcing natives to assimilate their culture or be pushed out. Settler-colonialism usually doesn't allow for the relatively nuanced approach of assimilation, instead opting for the approach of displacement or extermination.

The effects of settler colonialism can still be seen in society today. For example, the land that our schools, homes, shops, and workplaces are built on is stolen land that will never be ours no matter how much we build over it. Reservations for Native Americans still exist and have little to no resources to support the people who live on them in spite of the government limiting their spaces. Native people still face incredible amounts of discrimination and their lives are not treated as valued with many going missing or being victims of violence every year. There is also no representation for Native Americans in the US government in spite of them being the only true Americans. Environmental issues such as fires and climate change also dis-proportionally affect them because of how close they are to nature.

It's almost like a 'cover-up' to erase the history of people who previously inhabited the land. The things we learn today is a glorified war-culture story of American civilization. We think about the US being a hegemonic power and our sovereignty as a good thing rather than peace and establishing connections being the ultimate goal. There is also not a lot of reconciliation of the land that they took. Right now, textbooks describe the concept of genocide as immigration.

We can see the effects of Settler-Colonialism in the US today by comparing the land rights of Native Americans to the rest of the population. The white supremacist and Eurocentric values of Settler-colonists are also reflected in laws across the nation, showing their lasting impact on society today.
