This illustration shows a woman pointing at a man who looks frantic and scared. The man shows to be accused as being a witch by the woman sitting in the chair. During this time there was a group of girls who started to accuse many people of being witches. They would even "act" out if they were supposably near a witch by doing various actions. Some of these actions included freezing, complained about being pinched, or even making disturbing sounds. As 1692 came around, 200 hundred people were accused and jailed for witchcraft.

Witch Hysteria in Salem

As time passed a witch hysteria started to grow in Salem. It derived from a strong belief that Satan is alive and acting in this world. With any hardships the Puritans faced they would blame it on the acts of Satan. They also believed that Satan would recruit people of witchcraft to help him with his work. Soon, many people started to accuse each other of being witches. They mostly accused people that were foreign or enemies. It led to a huge hysteria that blew up.

The City Upon A Hill theory stated that the Massachusetts colony would be a place of complete reform. This theory was created to set the foundation for pure Christians around the world. The foundation included grace, total depravity, predestination, and limited atonement. Many of these beliefs are still used in some churches till this day. The Puritans built colleges such as Princeton and Harvard that revolved around their principles.

The word Puritan refers to the movement of reform that occurred in the Church of England. The Puritans wanted to get rid of any trace of the Catholic Church and build on the ideas of John Calvin. Down the road Charles the second demanded persecution of the Puritans. They ran away and migrated into the New world and established the Massachusetts Bay. Their strong beliefs started to create more fear and the act that witches were around them. This ended up leading to what is called the witch hysteria.

The act of Calvinism derived by a man named John Calvin and his followers. Calvinism derives strictly on the emphasis on the sovereignty of God and the act of predestination. The Puritans shared many beliefs with the people who practiced Calvinism. Since Calvinism was a act of pure Christianity and the sovereignty of God it caused more fear. These fears grew because of the witch scares that started to grow. The witch scare started to grow dramatically because of everyone's strict beliefs in God. Since witchcraft was against God, it was forbidden by the Calvinists and the Puritans.
