I have a Japanese friend I met in college. We happened to find out that five out of six of our classes overlapped in one semester, and that’s how we became really close friends. I’ve always been interested in Japanese culture and customs, and having a Japanese friend made it even more exciting. We traveled together often, and I showed her around my country. Thanks to her, my Japanese skills improved so much!

My uncle is British. When he was first introduced by my aunt, I was surprised by his unique English accent. It was fascinating to realize that English can sound so different depending on the country. Every holiday, my uncle shares British cultural traditions with me. I especially enjoy the 4 o'clock tea time he loves. Sitting with him, having delicious cookies and tea, makes me feel like an adult.

During the break, I spent time with a friend from abroad. At first, it was hard to communicate because of the language and cultural differences. But over time, we began to understand each other better, and it became a great opportunity to learn about different cultures. The Spanish my friend spoke felt familiar, even in the US, and it made me think I should try speaking Spanish one day. I was especially envious of the siesta – taking an afternoon nap!

I have a friend from Asia, and one day she brought lunch to school. It was the first time I saw food like that, and it looked so delicious! At first, I was surprised when she used chopsticks to eat, since I wasn’t used to them. But as I watched her eat so skillfully, I thought, ‘Maybe I should try using chopsticks too!’ It was a small moment, but it made me realize how we can learn so much from each other’s daily habits.
