History of The Muted Group Theory

The theory was developed by Edwin and Shirley Ardener, being further reinforced by Cheris Kramarae. This theory was developed with the idea that language is culture bound, language is made and controlled by dominant groups, meaning marginalized groups can find it harder to express themselves through language, so we say they are “muted” or “silenced”. Dominant language devalues the words, thoughts and experiences of marginalized groups.

What should the Muted Group Theory mean to managers?

Supervisors, managers and anyone in a position of management should be cautious and eliminate any biases in the workplace resulting for a linguistic barrier. Individuals who feel as if their voice is not heard, valued or considered are far less efficient than their counterparts who dominate the workplace language.

Fully understanding The Muted Group Theory can help managers conduct their jobs in a much more productive manner. For example, Muted group theory states that marginalized groups (including women) are more constrained in conversation because they have to speak a ‘men’s language’. Women or marginalized workers should never have to find it harder to express themselves, and it is managements job to ensure these minority groups are equally represented.

Why front-line supervisors in the Automotive industry need to be familiar with the theory

In an industry like automotive which is predominantly men, it can be seen as a responsibility of supervisors to be educated on this theory. They need to monitor their workplace to ensure employees of each gender, race or group are equally voiced and represented. The automotive industry has extreme stigma attached to it and consumers may feel as if their concerns are marginalized due to the service facilities intelligence and use of language. Supervisors must understand the effects that muting an unrepresented group can cause for an automotive business and the reparation's that can follow if these actions remain consistent.
