"Trench Town was, and still is, a ghetto in Kingston, Jamaica's capital. Back then it was a shantytown on tracks and dirt roads...You'd find cardboard houses, houses made of corrugated metal, concrete black houses." - Rita (Page 4). This was a visual description that Rita had given about her hometown.

After Rita's parents had split her father only had Rita and Wesley. And, from a young age the question of who's custody Rita and her brother was always raised. Rita and her brother Wesley had spent most of their younger days with their grandmother "Yaya" and their cousins at their grandmothers' house. This is because after Rita's parents had split her father had a very rough time financially. Very similarly to the rest of Trench Town's population having a rough time making ends meet. But, her father had gotten tired of the situation so he reached out to his sister Viola to stay with her. "But I had been sharing houses out between my mother and her own mother, my grandmother Yaya, before my father decided this was foolishness." - Rita (Page 4) Which she had refused ... at first.

To wedding caterer and wedding dressmaker. Had owned a house in Kingston Jamaica as well. Her Aunt had presided on 18A Greenwich Park Road which just happened to be right across the street from a cemetery. Despite the odd surroundings, they actually had one of the most aesthetically pleasing and functional houses in the area. "...where we lived, was one of the best-looking houses around... Now it has three bedrooms, a sewing room, an outside kitchen and pit toilet, a veranda, and a fence with a gate you could lock, which was very unusual in Trench Town, where in those days every place was open and you could walk into anyone's yard. We also had radio and later television, and even water piped into our yard, ... " -Rita (Page 5). Rita's Aunt Viola also had hired helpers for tasks around the house, and her main helper's name was Mas King.

Rita had a passion for music since she could hear. It was practically in her genes because her family is heavily musically oriented. She had started being recognized by her family for having an amazing voice at a young age. So good, that Rita's Aunt Viola had actually offered her services to her wedding clients on multiple occasions. She was taken up on that offer on multiple occasions. They also had family habits that always had her family surrounded by music. "It was our family's custom to gather every evening and sing, under the plum tree in the yard-..."- Rita (Page 10). She was always passionate about being a singer, but societal views had made her dream always seem so taboo. But, as she grew older music never left her life. Especially with how prominent music is in her family. Her family had always pushed her to pursue music in any non-harmful way because they knew how good she was.

So, when she got older and public school wasn't free for grade school anymore her aunt wanted her to go to a better school. So, they paid really expensive tuition for her to attend. Rita always wanted to make her two main support systems proud which were her brother and her aunt. This made her try to get all the best grades she could in school. Rita was 17 when she had gotten pregnant by her boyfriend at the time. When their parents eventually found out about the pregnancy she was pressured on all different sides to get rid of the baby. Except, by the father. "This was one of the greatest sins I could have committed while under Aunty's watchful eye. Everyone was disappointed in me." - Rita (Page 13). This was how Rita had viewed everyone's perspective on the situation. But, the father's mother had sent her son to England.

In Jamaica since there were so few ways to listen to music, most of the known bands or musicians were known from a long way around. So, people would easily recognize faces. When Rita noticed that one of the upcoming break-out bands "The Wailers" would walk by her house to get to their studio she took this chance to show her skills. After talking to one of the band members Peter in passing for a few days. She had held a conversation about her and the two people she had been singing with for fun at the time. So, of course, the band members were curious. Especially when the shy guitarist Robbie had come up. And this would lead to unknowing Rita's first conversation with her future husband Bob "Robbie" Marley. They show off their skills and are invited to one of their recording sessions.

Melanoma is a skin cancer usually attributed to getting too much sunlight or too much UV light. Rita was devastated. But, on top of losing the love of her life, all of the profits that Bob Marley was making were going to the label that Bob Marley was under. None of it was going to Rita and his children until about a decade later after long court battles. When it was proven that Bob Marley didn't write a will because it was against his religion. About 10% of those profits had gone to his wife with another 45% in life estates. And the remaining 45% went to his 12 children. They hadn't gotten the actual rights to Bob Marley's face and works until 1991. Rita was consistently at all of the live performances she could attend with the band. Even though the performing scene was wild she still loved it. But, Bob Marley always made sure she was safe no matter what. They always were exchanging thoughts and beliefs with one another because they enjoyed the company of each other. They always were lifting one another up and trying to make the best out of the other person. They helped each other with their careers and Robbie ended up being a father figure to Rita's child. Sharon had started calling him "Bahu" because she couldn't say, Robbie. But. this is all just building blocks for the pairing. They are still just really good friends.

There was a particular moment that Rita recalled when Robbie showed her immense compassion. It was when he found out that Rita was a mother. Instead of making her feel ashamed as most would he showed signs of great maturity that most his age wouldn't contain. He had then met Sharon who had loved him as he had loved her. Robbie would then come to visit Rita at her house and bring her baby necessities, and her Aunt Viola something whenever he had the money. You could never find the pairing separated after that. Robbie soon started claiming her as "his girl". So, Rita had received a different sort of respect from everyone around after Robbie had claimed her.

A Rasta is the term the Jamaican locals have for the followers of the religion/social movement Rastafarianism. This community was always under scrutiny by the rest of the country because of the way society looked at them. They were seen as sleazy lowlifes. But, no one ever talked about the values of the movement and the positions they held on political issues that were an issue in the country at the time. They consistently were the voice against colorism and racism in Jamaica. And they push the values of peace. "They didn't cut their hair or straighten it, instead letting it grow naturally into"locks," or "dreadlocks," The word "dread," now used in many ways, has its origin in the Rastafari challenge to Jamaican colonial authority. Which of us is "dreadful"? In Jamaica, Rasta was the last thing you wanted your children to be involved with. People said it turned its followers worthless, that besides smoking ganja Rastas didn't eat properly, wash their hair, or brush their teeth. Only the worst things were said about them - no one mentioned the Rasta message of peace and love and understanding and justice, its refusal of pain and abuse, although they silently agreed with its message of black pride." -Rita (Page 37-38) Since Rita and Bob always shared their viewpoints on things together, Bob exposed her to the movement and what it was all about. Which hadn't bothered Rita at all because she had seen the whole picture. But, the people around her, however, didn't agree with this. After they found out, they didn't see the "nice boy" Robbie they saw "the boy". Especially after he had started growing his locs, the different treatment started becoming more apparent.

Rita's dad had basically been a freeloader in his sister's home. So, since he wasn't making much of a profit in Jamaica doing carpentry. His sister had given him the travel fare to go to England. Like many other Jamaican people leaving for England to make money to send back to their families. When he left he promised to send back for his kids. But, he never ended up fulfilling his promise. "...that dream never materialized because he was never financially able." - Rita (Page 9). And this is why Leroy wasn't able to send for his kids.

After their marriage, Bob Marley wasn't of the loyal sort. But, neither was Rita. Both of them had affairs and had children with some. But, Bob Marley's infidelities were much more public. Which obviously had hurt and angered Rita. Despite this, they never ended up divorcing because of the strong bond they emotionally held with one another. Rita ended up having another child with another man when she was married to Bob, but she and her husband also had many children together. She had three children where Bob Marley was the father and three more who were with other men. Marley ended up adopting these other children as his own. But, he ended up having 6 more children with other women.

This is a hit single that was written in 1978 and released in 1983 by Bob Marley & The Wailers with Rita Marley and Junior Tucker as backup vocals. The meaning of this song was to allude to racial social injustices that were leading to bigger conflicts in the country. Many of Rita and Bob Marley's songs together had an underlying message to them because they were active in promoting humanitarianism. If you analyze the lyrics to this song it even alludes to Rastas and the loc hairstyle.
