After Watching La Revolucion Filipina: React from the form used to present the historical revolution of 1896 on stage by the Ballet Philippines. This is just an excerpt of a two hours dance theater production of 1896 revolution entitled La Revolucion Filipina.

EXTERNAL CRITICISM 🧠
A. COSTUMES – The ensemble did not use the typical ballet costumes and outfit which are tutu, leotards and ballet shoes.

🕺 MEN used split-dance pants as their trousers to create visual effect on dance movements and to achieve an impression of lightness and flight. They also used fitted clothes and see-through top to show power and masculinity.

💃 WOMEN’s color selection is appropriate and creates a modest and innocent impression. They also innovated the typical tutu dress into modern elegant dress. On the other hand, they did not use a ballet shoes instead, they performed on barefoot – which somewhat creates a lapses. Since they are barefooted, they didn’t execute foot position (en pointe technique) flawlessly during the travel time. (3:33 – 3:42)

A. PROPS – Kudos to the director and choreographer who administered La Revolucion Filipina 2014; for being avant-garde on using the ensemble itself to be a theatrical property. They did not only interpret the entire revolution but the props as well. See (4:33 – 4:37) as an example, instead of a chair they used performer as a counterpart that creates a strong sense of creativity and ingenuity.

B. SETTING – The La Revolucion Filipina 2014 was held and conducted at Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Pasay City. Which is a brilliant idea to honor and commemorate heroes during Philippine Revolution. According to history, Pasay produced numerous heroes during the Philippine Revolution. Andres Bonifacio was from Pasay, he led the Katipunan and spearheaded the revolution. It is also an explanation why Fort Bonifacio lies in the city of Pasay and Taguig.

INTERNAL CRITICISM 🧠
A. STYLE – La Revolucion Filipina 2014 is an interpretative dance through contemporary ballet. It is a contemporary ballet because it incorporates the elements of both classical and modern ballet. Contemporary ballet represents a departure from the restraints of traditional classical ballet technique and traditional rules of composition. In a nutshell, the history Filipino Revolution is interpreted in a ballet style.

B. CHOREOGRAPHY – The choreography was tight and compact – but not as perfect as I mentioned the lapses earlier. However, it is still manageable and not noticeable at all. The choreography is also unique, in somewhat I sensed a little bit of Philippine cultural steps the way they do the “HAGOD” (3:51 – 3:56).

C. EMOTIONS – The emotions and delivery were fine as perfect. A balanced expression through line deliveries was quite magnificent, and it is not exaggerated at all. A well-mannered for the performer who act as Apolinario Mabini which shown great conviction and highly commendable.

D. THEME – Definitely the theme was not cliché. It is a great way to remember our heroes and for what they have done and sacrificed to achieve Philippine independence. It is also a great opportunity to promote an educational advocacy for us to learn how to preserve this history for the next generation.

After Watching La Revolucion Filipina:
React from the form used to present the historical revolution of 1896 on stage by the Ballet Philippines (This is just an excerpt of a two hours dance theater production of 1896 revolution entitled La Revolucion Filipina)

Although I couldn't watch the whole performance, the excerpt was enough to give me hints on what La Revolucion Filipina is about despite using a physical theater form.

Physical theater is a style of performance wherein the primary means of communicating with the audience is through movements. According to the the site shared to us (theatercrafts), the performer or actor in physical theater will need to concentrate on:
-The use of body shape and position
-Facial expressions
-Rhythmical movement, pace and the energy of the body
-Gesture
-Posture
-Gait

All of these are present in the performance. And with the use of those, i understood what they were trying to say.

For example, during the first part, the guy in gray (the one who talks) was asking questions to the person seated on the stairs. He responds not by talking back but by moving his hands. That same guy (the one in the stairs) was shown as a crippled guy who was carried by his kapwa Filipinos. He is the representation of those who did not participate in the revolution and supported the Spaniards instead.

Another idea i got, is about the two opposing sides. One side is convinced that the revolution is finished and one side is saying that it's not. This is also shown through the costumes wherein there are two sets/style.
I think it's great that they were able to communicate these meanings through ballet and movements.

Also, the choreography is designed as a 'combination of dialogue and physical movement' like what the company of Frantic Assembly does. Frantic Assembly is known for its minimal dialogue/script in the play but much of its impact in production comes from the movements. Meaning to say,
in short, storytelling without words.

Also, physical theater actually requires a high level of control and flexibility. Whether a movement is large or small, it needs to be precise because the audience is looking at every move you make. The high level of control is definitely seen because they had to hold their positions for like forty second or so.

Overall, I can say that the dance is superb. Telling a story using mostly of physical movements is hard enough on its own. But combining ballet with it? To be able to choreograph that is proof of creativeness and skill.

It made possible because of the synchronized movements of the ballet dancers, and the skillful performances of other actors. Each spoken lines were given a justice through conviction or emphasis in delivery. Voice quality is good as it is loud and explicit enough to be heard and understand by the audience. The costumes are flexible, in such a way that it is not only meant for dancing, it also represented the role of each character. The stage designs were simplified but it is expansive enough to be able to carry out the said play. Hence, I can say that participants of this play tremendously exerted their full efforts and invested such amount of money so it turned out worthwhile.

After watching the La Revolution Filipino, it was commendable on how they conveyed the historical revolution through movements or dancing. The performers performed gracefully and in synchronized way and it is not the same with the dance we used to see; it is completely different and unique. Also, their emotions are on point and they put right emotions to every movement they do. They also have smooth transitions and do not have any “dead air” and by watching them you will not feel any boredom. In addition, the costumes used represented each character and it was easy to distinguish their roles because of the distinction used in costumes. Even though it is just an excerpt, I was able to feel the emotions and the message they want the audience to understand and we can clearly see how much efforts they exerted to make this play possible and be a good one.

The story revolves around the sublime paralytic Mabini and his role in the revolution.
La Revolucion Filipina is its use of neo-ethnic style—a combination of Filipino ethnic and folk dance.

The first thing that I've noticed are the ways they performed it, the way they performed it lies on the physical theatre. Physical theatre is a type of performance were physical movement is the primary method of storytelling. Next are the physical appearances of the performers like their costumes. On the excerpt, the male performers used pants with wide and slit ends while the female performers has elegant dresses which I think are kind of modern Filipiñana.

There are also some short dialogues on the performance wherein they narrate some lines from the La Revolucion Filipina. Facial expressions, gestures, postures and gait were present also in the dance performance. All in all, I can say that the Ballet Philippines perform very well, telling some part of our history through dances especially ballet is one of a kind.

It includes Naturalism which tackles the reality that somehow happened in our history. Next is the Modernism which enables the audience to reflect on their life critically, the scene in the performance where in one of the performer said "Hindi ka man lang nagkaroon ng lakas upang gisingin ang iyong mga kababayan nung pinili nilang manahimik," this line, if the audience are attentive enough they will able to reflect on what they can do for their country and not only toremain silent. Lastly is the Physical Theater, from what I've read, it makes use of the body as the primary means of performance and communication with audience which is present even on the first part of the performance itself. It mostly uses body position, facial expression rhythmical movement , gesture and posture. Also, it focuses more on narrative just like what the performer did wherein they are conveying in the middle of their performances.

Theaterical styles and forms are also present in La Revolucion Filipina such as Naturalism because we all know that this story are really happened on our country about many years ago, Expressionism because of the power and the tone of voice from one of the performer that append to express the real emotion of the character and for us to deeply understand the essence of the story. And of course, Modernism because La Revolucion Filipina is a story based from reality but it performed more timley to connect with the audiences through their movements, costumes and the addition of ballet dance.
Even though I am not into historical theater performances, after watching this one it gives me goosebumps because of the lines that can be a calling for us (filipinos) to always fight for what is right and for our rights just like how our heroes fought for our country to attain the freedom we are all experiencing right now.

From the form used to present the historical revolution of 1986 on stage by the Ballet Philippines, it is obviously a Physical Theater.
This performance concentrated on the use of body shape and position, their dance is perfectly interpreted to narrate the historical revolution of 1986. The performers really did well to take the audience on a journey where settings and storylines are made with the performers’ own physical movements. You can observe from the excerpt that facial expressions were included expressing more strong narrative. With not so much dialogue and only a music, dance and physical resources, they able to elaborate the clarity of the story resulting an effective communication and established a performers/audience relationship. The presentation reached the aim of Physical Theater, in which it combines the imagination of both audience and the performer. Regarding with the details about costumes, they did not used the standard costume of ballet but prefer contemporary costume to completely shown their physical movements relating to the story. Props are limited to fully create imagination.
No wonder, this performance by Ballet Philippines choreographed by Agnes Locsin, with libretto by Dennis Marasigan and music by Ryan Cayabyab received many awards.

At first, I was expecting that it was just a normal piece of ballet however this one is different: it’s like an interpretative show that focuses on the story behind the historical revolution of 1986.

With the performance, it was truly amazing as you can observe how they are really committed in the context of the show. The actors and actresses transformed themselves as one of the people of 1986 to clearly portray and convey the message of the story to the audience. The use of facial expressions was somehow catchy as it really shows the emotions of every character. One thing also that I observed, is the use of dialogue. Ways back then, I see ballet as a type of dancing where it uses your physical body to perform a show however this La Revolution Filipina used some dialogue to add some conciseness in the eyes of the viewers. Personally, the use of dialogue add some spice to the performance as it gives some tension to the mood and setting of the whole performance.

Overall, it is a must watch performance as it well open your mind to the history and pride of Filipino.

At first, I just thought that it's just a normal ballet but as going trough the movements aree amazingly executed to the point that it was executed like the charactrs and doing a certain actions. The entrance at the beginning is my favorite part, it's perfect how they used the stairs to execute some of the scenes. I observed that it is a ballet with the pinch of interpretative spices. Another good thing is how they used some dialogues as this will not leave question marks to the audiences which also ensure that audience can follow what is happening and how the story flow.

This is very new on my eyes as I get used to a theater and musical play. In my own opinion, it will be entertaining to watch it with that kind of set up because they actual stairs and hallways that makes it look like they are in the actual place in the story.

Next is their movements. It is very noticeable that their movements are exaggerated. This makes the performance more lively and every movement helps to interpret the story. This is one of the best example of a physical theater where we should be emphazising the physical movements like dancimg, acting, and etc.

Lastly, I noticed that there are minimal dialogues. They are consistent on showing a physical theater because of that. Their movements are enough to portray the story that they want to tell us. If I will be given a chance, i would like to be in there and watch it live.

The whole story was well-executed and I can feel the emotions of the performers. Though I think the stage they are using is too small for them, they still able to perform well and address the message and morals to the audience. The ballet dancers gave justice to their role that makes the audience more into them. The costume they used are simple because they have to move comfortably and the performance focuses on the dance movements. I am also amused bye their choreography because it is so pleasant to watch.

Overall, it was fun to watch La Revolucion Filipina because it commemorates our fellow Filipinos who joined the revolution and it also empowers our culture and tradition.

Bergado,Sherwin S.
2EDENG3A
The perfromance about the La Revolucion Filipina has been presented to us in a manner of precise artistical representation through the form of contemporary dance ballet was such a fresh idea for young audiences and many Filipinos. For me it gives an energy of dramatic vigor that was release by the outstanding dance skills of the performers, not only that this performance reminded me with tableux where narration is present and after each delivery dialouge of the characters their is a corrresponding movement that follows through it, a story telling with an artistic flow of body language rather. The main highlight was the exquisite dance if the performers that makes the essence of the story even more interesting to follow since the movements they give are full of imagery for audiences to decipher its meaning (decipher in a way of knowing the meaning of the dance). Even thought it has its contemporary value it manages to makes us feel its traditional element with the usage of ethnical music base on what I can they are enthnic istruments used to produce that type of sound which is a good point to show the richness of our taste of Filipino music, one noticable point is also their costumes.

I must admit, I wish there is a way to wstch the whole performance rather than just an 9min exerpt. I love the movements of every dancers. You have to be a person who appreciates art just to understand and appreciate what they were all doing.

What they did is called Contemporary Theatre. Contemporary Theatre is combined with Physical Theatre and Dance Theatre with dialogues. I have to rewatch over and over again just to understand what they were all saying since its just a phone record, i kind of struggle what they were exactly saying.

I am very impressed on how they used Naturalism as their form. Kinda struggle once more identifying what other forms theyve used but Im assure they used naturalism. Their steps are what I called grace and fluid. The one who dances very good, I am mesmerized on how he had such a flexible body, more flexible than any other dancers there, and then I realize that exquisite dancer was playing the role of the protagonist, Apolinario Mabini when he did some actions as a blind man. Judging from the other dancer who speaks alot, from his hair and costume, It looks like Emilio Aguinaldo to me.

The costume, I love how they made the costumes fit for a Ballet Dancer. Ballet Dancers usually wear tight fitted costumes so I like how they created those costumes. They made a ballet costume version of the Barong Tagalog and even Emilio Aguinaldo's somehow soldier or commander outfit that really helps to recognize easily what certain character he was playing. They even made a ballet costume version of the Katipunero which Im shookt and very impressed. The musical scores really are impressive as well because they used traditional musical instruments while saying dramatic dialogues or monologues. I wish I can find a way to watch the whole performance because I want to underrstand more and appreciate the performance even more. Well done to these performers with their well made performance.

I can say that it's a combination of dance theatre and physical theatre. I love the Ballet performances well executed, very elegant and very gracious. At the same time it tells a story and that's how I like it. Personally I love dancing contemporary dance even though I'm not that good, I'm very interested to execute those flawless and elegant dance steps. And I wanna learn from that. The theatre revolves on how the Philippines facing a revolution against spain, then the Philippines fell on a triumph. The theatre was wel executed by, I think it's a bit long for 2 hours, it should be like around 1 hour I guess. Because like any other historical piece, the main point should focus on the delivery and the message conveys on the theatre. To better deliver and serve its meaning to the audiences' eyes. For them rmto relate and understand and since it's a historical theme theatre okay, it should be letting the viewers visualize the circumstances that was face before. Overall the theatre was marvelous and the dancers and heatre actors play their part very well. The ambiance was a mixture of tradional and a bit foreign because of the intricate dance styles and the usage of ethnic instruments to showcase the culture and filipinism in the play.

At first, I was really curious about the whole flow of the story because of the first scene on the stairs. But it all makes sense when I finished the video. The actors and actresses are synchronized. The play is unusual to me because it is mixed up with interpretative dance and dialogue. I realized that theater is an art where you can perform different types of performances in a theatrical play. They are successful in producing this kind of performance because they are excellent in portraying their character. It signifies a lot of deep meanings regarding the history of our country on achieving independence from Spanish and Americans. Indeed, it resembles the bravery of Filipinos in fighting for their land. It is an out of bound love for our country and its citizen.

If I were to put my wisdom into words, I could definitely apprise that the theatre performance has been very unusual to witness by my own eyes, as it was seen different compared to the typical ballet dance that was being originally performed. The steps are executed in a distinctive manner, in which made the whole performance unique and interestingly to see. At first glance, I honestly have been out of confusion seeing a historical type of performance mixed with the original form of ballet. But as soon as it gradually moved from one step to another, I was amazed on how they creatively added some spice and performed the 1896 revolution which happened historically back then. It was truly a nostalgic experience, since I was able to witness an outstanding performance behind the predicaments that occurred in the past. In terms of its' interpretation, I noticed that they convey the strength of their emotions through performing vigorous steps. The steps, indeed, are being emphasized with exaggerated movements which helped to encompass the feelings all throughout the performance. The costumes and props are also what showed the Filipino's utmost culture and tradition, and how they started the revolution with a unified system of Filipino people.

I also love the stage production. How costly it might be but definitely worth it.

I was amazed on their performance. It’s not just a ballet performance that we normally see, they performed it well and I noticed their uniqueness. Filipinos are really talented, indeed. It is such an honor to witness this kind of performance. The impulsiveness of their movements is electrifying. There is a driving force to their movements that exude raw emotions. La Revolucion Filipina also portrays allegorical figures such as Inang Bayan which represents the ideals of democracy. It also focuses on the contentious relationship between Mabini and Aguinaldo. Although they share the same hope for a better world, they still have opposing view on how to attain it. The performance consists of historical tableaux portraying the factionalism among the Katipunero and leaders of the Malolos Congress. It depicts the Filipinos’ misinterpretation of freedom as licentiousness.

Here are the cents of my thoughts upon watching the La Revolucion Filipina:

1. The overall concept and plot of their piece sprouted the records of the ever undying resistant of the Filipinos against the oppressors in the past in which an efficient and creative method to pass down such remarkable events of the country to the future generation.

2. Performance wise, the amount of effort exerted in each moves is definitely visible to the eye. The emotions and the gestures matched exactly a single routine that neither one of it was out of the place.

3. In the visual and props aspect; the stage neither felt empty nor packed. Perhaps because their physical routine alone could serve the whole performance from its starting cue to its ending.

4. The subtle lines that accompanied few of the moves were also delivered firm and clear; its conciseness directly instilled the thought of the performance which is also a nice method to further extend and or convey the underlying message of the piece.

Nevertheless, the whole presentation was executed far above my expectancies and the meaning alone of their piece is an enough point to commend their performance.

This shows the creativeness and talent of Filipinos in theaters. Well, this performance is truly stunning, and there's no doubt about that. It is probably the better showcase of Physical Theater I have seen so far. The stage wasn't a real stage, but they manage to include it in the performance, and the costume of the performers was produced to align and to emphasize its theme. Their dialogues were presented in a loud voice enough not to use a microphone, the emotions of the performers were fascinating for you can understand the feelings of their role in their faces, and last but not least, the movements of the dancers were extensive and precise. Those movements were huge enough to portray the tale of the story and enough to entice the people who are watching their performance.

2EDENG3A

After watching 'La Revolucion Filipina' I am amazed. The story that Mabini himself wrote was loaded with inside knowledge regarding Aguinaldo's presidency and his exile in Guam. He wrote about freedom and the feeble attempt of Filipinos to gain their freedom from the Spaniards' oppression.

The theater was spot on, they have simplified the complexity of the novel. They also showcased the feelings of Mabini's written work and set them into motion.
The actors and actresses were great, they had perfect control and flow in their movements. The delivery of their lines was loud and clear, the feelings they portrayed made the crowd feel immersed with the story like they were a part of the play as well. The ballet aspect was an intriguing idea as Filipinos do not have a background in such dance choreography but, the way they mixed their moves to better incorporate a sense of patriotism in Filipino form is amazing. The clothes they wore were accurate enough, and the performance itself glazed over the fact that they used very few props and that their stage was not the usual backdrop you see in theater performances.
To wrap up everything, I wish I was given a chance to watch live as I know I would have a better feel and grasp on the characters, the atmosphere, and the whole performance as a whole where the crowd is an active participant in the play.
