Chapter one

" Okonkwo was clearly cut out for great things. He was still young but he had won the fame of the greatest wrestler in the nine villages.”

This means that okonkwo is going to do something with his life unlike his father. he is young and willing to work hard. He is also a great wrestler that is the best among the nine villages. This quote has to do with the theme because being a wrestler in their village means that they are masculine. He feels like he has to be different then his father as well because his father was not respected.

“ okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper.”

Well in their world/village men are the dominant sex and they “ rule” over their families, including their wives. Women are relegated to a more or less servile position, often living in fear of their husbands. Though apparently he has the unquestionably has the right to be aggressive at home. This quote relates because apparently aggression has to deal with masculinity and makes men dominant. Everyone has a different view on masculinity and Okonkwo thinks if he’s more aggressive it makes him more respected and masculine even tho he’s scaring his wives.

Chapter 4 quote
" inwardly okonkwo knew that the boys were still too young to understand fully the difficult art of preparing seed-yams. But he thought that one could not begin too early. Yam stood for manliness, and he who could feed his family on yams from one gravest to another was a very great man indeed. Okonkwo Wanted his son to be a great farmer and a great man. He would stamp out the disquieting signs of laziness which he thought he already saw in him.”

This quote relates to the theme I chose because it has to do with manliness and masculinity because the more yams a man is able to grow, the more respected he is in his community. In his community that is how they see it and that’s the truth because in reality for them the more yams a man is able to grow the more he can feed his family and Be respected.

He had been a great and fearless warrior in his time, and was now accorded great respect in all the clan.”

The quote relates to the theme because, for showing matchless courage on the battlefield, Ezeudu is revered throughout the clan. His reputation garners his great respect. he shows everyone how he’s masculine and he gets respect because he was strong and not weak.

“ is that right that you, Okonkwo, should bring your mother a heavy face and refuse to be comforted? Be careful or you may displease the dead. Your duty is to comfort your wives and children and take them back to your fatherland after seven years. But if you allow sorrow to weigh you down and kill you, they will all die in exile.”

This quote has to do with the theme because Okonkwo thought he was all high and mighty and now he did something wrong and can lose all that power and masculinity in one fine swoop and take him back to reality.

This image relates to the theme because in their village it seems like if your not strong or violent or fight people wrestle etc your not a real men. I picked this image because a man should never feel like they have to hide emotions or anything. It takes them away from the reality of emotions, life anything. Like in the story Okonkwos wife’s were scared of him but for some reason it was acceptable. In our time that wouldn’t be and men should be the same as women and not superior.

I picked this photo because it relates to the theme I chose and the book. This image talks about all the issues our society faces with masculinity and the lies and the expectations that men feel that they need to portray. Which is why it takes them away from reality, family etc. Men such as Okonkwo were abusive, Thinga Fall Apart if you think about it relate to some real life stories including abuse, murder alot of things that need to be changed.

This video explains how thoughts and ideas that are put into men’s heads can really cause issues with the real world. Men try to be cool or superior or make everyone think that their not just for success. This relates to the theme I chose because it can really take men away from reality, happiness and more.

I chose this video because it relates to the theme I chose. This video also in a way relates to the book how they talked about how it was a “ female crime” or how Okonkwo wanted Ezinma to be a male because she had female masculinity. Masculinity has stereotypes as well and this video explains some stereotypes on how if a girl is masculine how people will think she is gay or how she will act. Which in the book if you were a wrestler you were respected so it shows diffrent views.

I picked this article to go along with my theme because, the views people have on masculinity is all different and it always will be. Like if a girl decides she wants to play football or basketball that makes her lesbian or a “ ton boy “ but if a men does it , it makes them masculine and strong, manly. In Things Fall Apart if a boy or men wrestle it automatically makes them have respect and if they treat their wives bad for some reason it earns them respect and makes them masculine. Men still in this society today think that’s ok and if their rude thinks it makes them more masculine just like in Things Fall Apart.
