Slavery III: The 13th Amendment and “black codes”

the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in America after the American civil war.

The purpose of the 13th Amendment was at first, to prevent another civil war from happening. Many lives were lost. Homes, cities, towns, etc. Were destroyed. Nobody wanted another Civil War to happen. So, the 13th Amendment was proposed, passed, and added to the U.S constitution.

Black codes were restrictive laws designed to limit the freedom of African Americans and ensure their availability as a cheap labor force after slavery was abolished during the Civil War. Black Codes restricted black people's right to own property, conduct business, buy land. This was typically done through so-called non-attached bans – it made it illegal for blacks not to have a job. All African Americans had to be able to always present a work contract valid for a certain period. If they could not, they were sentenced to forced labour.

Jim Craw was a fictional figure who was made for entertainment for the white people. The Creator of Jim craw was Thomas D. Rice, he painted himself black and then acted foolish. This act was made to make fun of the black people and make the white people entertained.

This entertainment figure Jim Crow named the laws who the black people was under from 1877 to the civil rights movement in 1950. The laws were called “Separate but equal”where black and white people wasn’t allowed to use the same things. For example, drinking fountains.

Black and white people wasn’t allowed to use the same things like benches, schools, restaurants and so on.

The “separate but equal” quote where made to excuse the separation, because the white people meant that blacks and white had equal rights, but they were just separated from the white.

The reality wasn’t quite like that. Often the things black people were allowed to use was in poorly shape in comparing to the white peoples things.

Rodney King was a taxi driver who was assaulted by four police officers, three were white and one wasn’t. this started huge problems in Los Angeles and started many riots and political protests. Even though Rodney King was the victim, he was charged with “Felony Evading”, but the charges were dropped. The four police officers didn’t get the punishment they deserved, and that was the part that started the huge problem. All of this started the “Los Angeles Riots”. This was a huge thing, that eventually lead to black lives matter. Alle of this was a good start, so people know, how big this problem was and still is today.
