"Everyone has something good about them," she said. "You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that." "Oh yeah?" I said. "How about Hitler? What was his redeeming quality. "Hitler loved dogs," Mom said without hesitation. Rose Mary thinks that everyone has a good part of them even though they might be a bad person which she is living in a fantasy. Jeannette is living in the reality because she could see how bad of a person they are and not care about other people.

Dad had always said that self-defence was a justifiable reason for shooting someone."
Many children have parents that take care of them and look out for them but jeannette has to look out for herself and take care for herself because her parents don't take care of her but being self-sufficient is a major part of growing up it just happened early for jeannette.

At the ending parts of the story when she meets her father for the last time she forgives him for “all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he [has] created in [her life].” She says: “I could not imagine what my life would be like- without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had." Jeannette Walls always forgives her parents for whatever they are going through and show the readers if people refuse to forgive others, they relegate themselves to living in the past and never being in the present moment, where all the good things in life happen.

I'd heard that question at least two hundred times, and I'd always answered it the way he wanted me to, because I thought it was my faith in Dad that kept him going all those years." Jeannette always caires about her dad and loves him even though he can't give them a good life and not keep his promises but Jeannette loves him no matter what without receiving anything in return.
