Communication is very key in leadership in my opinion. Lastly, do not ask of anyone what you are not willing to do yourself. Some leaders like to crack the whip to get things done while others are out there working the hardest and leading the charge!

I entered leadership because I have a deep passion for helping students thrive. I believe that every student deserves a supportive environment where they can explore their potential. By taking on a leadership role, I want to create opportunities for growth and learning. I want to be a voice for those who might feel unheard and to foster a sense of community. Guiding peers through challenges and celebrating their successes brings me immense joy. Leadership allows me to advocate for positive change, ensuring that every student feels valued.

Leadership can take many forms, but generally boils down to influencing others to act in ways they otherwise might not have. In the context of education, leadership operates at multiple levels. The role of leaders in education is to provide professional learning and growth leadership, instructional leadership, school improvement leadership, and community leadership.

We provide leadership in professional learning and growth by modeling, supporting, and encouraging lifelong learning. This means leading by example by making time for job-related professional growth activities. This could include school and district sponsored professional learning opportunities, but could extend beyond these. Regardless of the source of professional learning, it must involve partaking in realistic, in-depth self reflection with the express goal of identifying opportunities for self-improvement and opportunities to develop skills that will best serve the specific needs of the school community. This vocal focus on professional development can influence others - teachers, students, admin, community members - to pursue their own personal growth plans.

Certificated staff also provide instructional leadership. At the micro, student-by-student level, this includes differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students, such as our ELL population and students with IEPs and 504 plans. At the macro level, teachers and other certificated staff lead by understanding the school and community contexts in which they operate. Their knowledge of the cultural-linguistic and the socioeconomic realities of their students help inform their decisions. This is influence at its most visible in education - influencing students to engage with content when they otherwise may not have meaningful access.

Certificated staff provide leadership in school improvement by helping to identify student and schoolwide needs, by collaborating with other stakeholders to develop data-based improvement plans, by implementing those plans, and by collaboratively monitoring and revising those plans based on student outcomes. This means coming to discussions around school improvement prepared and ready to engage in fruitful conversations; it means being confident and assertive, but open to and inviting of all stakeholders’ participation; and it means honestly reflecting and assessing the needs of the school as well as assessing the efficacy of any given school improvement initiative. This is leadership by representative influence - taking part in meaningful discussions that will shape future decisions that will affect the entire school community.

Finally, certificated staff provide community leadership by representing and promoting the school’s achievements and needs to the community at large. This means being present within the community, engaging in community events, and interacting with the public - a public which includes parents, students, business owners, and other pillars of a community. In a broad sense, certificated staff can provide leadership by involving community members in helping to achieve the school’s vision and goals. Students only spend so much time at school - their success depends in large part on what goes on beyond the school’s boundaries. The leadership certificated staff can provide within the community can go a long way in helping students be successful on campus.

A leader is a torch bearer. This is an extended metaphor so please be patient. The torch is the vision of the group and the torch bearer lights the way for others to be inspired, to grow, and to carry the vision of the group themselves. I think a powerful leader creates bridges ... creates family ... so that trust becomes fluid throughout conversations, actions, and the production of the vision. The vision is fluid and grows, gains strength, and recreates itself as the group grows. Being a leader is being focused on the prize, but also noticing when the prize needs to shift. Being a leader means being aware of others and creating trusting, authentic relationships with others. Being a leader means being an example. Being a leader is tough.

Leadership is having a clear vision of a goal or mission and the ability to communicate that vision to others in order to move an organization(or group) towards accomplishing the goal. Leaders need to have the capacity to understand that individuals respond differently and be able to use communication and mentoring skills to keep everyone going in the same direction. Leadership involves being knowledgeable and flexible to provide the resources that teams will need to accomplish their portion of the goal by eliminating the shoulda, woulda, coulda. Leadership is building. Together Everyone Accomplishes More.
