Extreme isolation- In 1915, Augusta moved the family to a remote farm to isolate her sons from what she saw as the evils of society (women). Ed Gein’s mother preached how women are evil creatures that want to trap down men. Ed had no friends at school ,was very quiet and never socialized in public. After Gein’s mother had her first stroke they both stayed inside and talked to no one. After his mother had her second stroke and died Gein treated her room as a memorial and made sure to keep it all the same.

While his mother was an active part of both of their lives, Augusta often preached about the Bible stating that women (except herself) were prostitutes and and were apart of the devils plan. She was also known to regularly isolate both of her sons, only taking them out of the home for school as well as being known for verbally abusing her sons. Despite all of torment Geins mother put him through, he still remained loyal to her till the day she died.

Gein idolized his mother Augusta , who indoctrinated him and his brother with her strict views that sex was evil and all other women were “instruments of the devil” . Augusta also cultivated his dependence by isolating the family on a remote farm, When Augusta died in 1945 Gein was left devastated. He became lonely and his already fragile mental state deteriorated, which led him down a path of grave robbing and murder. After the death of his mother Gein preserved her bedroom and sitting room exactly as they were allowing the rest of the house to fall into squalor.

Due to Ed Gein’s geographical location he was able to stay under the radar with his gruesome interests. Gein moved away from the town to his rural farmhouse which allowed him to stay anonymous because there was no-one around to catch him and honestly no-one thought much of the Gein family. Gein also killed during hunting season because most of the town was going out to hunt which allowed Gein to get away with the killing of Hogan and to kill Worden without anyone catching him till later on. So this means his location allowed to do what he did while staying undetected

Ed Gein’s mother moved the family to La Crosse, WI, in 1915. It was a flat, empty, and anonymous part of Wisconsin, especially the farm he lived on because there was no one nearby. Making it easier for Ed Gein to get away with the murders. Another thing is, because he was so isolated in that town it drove him mad and insane, most likely causing him to commit those murders.

Growing up Edward Gein was socially outcasted as a kid and was subjected to ridicule due to his poor communication skills. Despite being polite, he found it difficult to navigate the world being a young boy. His mother, Augusta Gein’s brutal teachings about how evil the world was and how all women, excluding herself, were prostitutes were consistent in their household. During their upbringing, she would continuously verbally abuse young Ed and his brother, Henry. This abuse obscured the boy’s views on the world and the Gein brothers were “severely traumatized” (Plum 11:25-11:27), not just in a religious aspect. Ed, being a young impressionable kid, took his mother’s berating to heart, believing all of her teachings and applying them to the world as kid. Augusta was all Ed “had ever known and her control over his life was complete.” (Plum 12:19-12:24)

Due to living outside of town and away from people, it was very easy for him to commit all those crimes and get away with it. Nobody even realized that he was taking those bodies out of their graves and bringing them to his farmhouse, without getting caught.
