The concept of freedom directly ties into all of Janie's relationships and all throughout her life. Janie starts out wanting only one thing from life, which is the choice to pick her own future from the endless horizon she sees ahead of her. Each relationship Janie is in though, results in her losing a piece of her freedom, shrinking her horizons. In Self Reliance, Emerson says, "These are the voices which we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world. Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint-stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity". This relates to Janie in the sense that as she enters new relationships she is the member surrendering her liberty and the shareholder is the person she is with. Janie conforms to their will and ultimately receives poor treatment.
