Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Ohio. His parents were Samuel and Nancy Edison. Growing up, school was tough for Thomas because he had difficulty hearing the lessons. This curious child asked lots of questions. Experimenting was one of Thomas favorite thing to do. Once when he was experimenting with fire in his father's barn, the barn burned to the ground. Also, Thomas made a nest and filled it with goose and chicken eggs. He sat on it to see if they would hatch. But of course the eggs didn't hatch! Beginning in 1859, when Thomas was twelve, he worked as the candy butcher on the Grand Trunk Railroad. He sold candies, sandwiches, fruits, and newspapers. In 1868, at the Mount Clements station, Thomas spotted a boxcar rolling towards a tiny boy. This amazing hero dropped everything and sprinted to the little boy and saved the child! The boy's father was so thankful that he taught Thomas about telegraphy. As a result, Edison worked for 6 years as a telegraphy operator.

Did you know Thomas Edison was an amazing inventor? In 1869, when Edison was 22 years old, he was very poor, and he slept in the basement of a gold company. There he found some equipment that was broken and quickly sought to fix it. The owner of the gold company thought Edison excelled at inventing and rewarded him with a job. This amazing scientist improved many machines so much so the company gave him $40,000. Thomas Edison invented many useful items. In fact he patented around 1,093 inventions. Edison invented lots of things, but his light bulb was his most famous invention. Thomas Edison found out that filament can burn about 200 hours, so he used filament to build the light bulb. His light bulb is still used by people today. He also improved the camera. Edison's camera could take motion pictures. The inventor improved the telephone and the phonograph as well. Edison improved Alexander Graham Bell's telephone transmitter, and found automatic telegraphy could transmit messages at higher speeds than the telegraph. He also invented the vote recorder, and it was the first invention he patented. Thomas Edison invented a storage battery. It was used for electric automobiles. This terrific inventor earned many awards. He received 11 awards in total. He died on October 18, 1931 in West Orange, New Jersey when he was 84 years old.
