I liked that you ask for iterations of the work. When I write a paper, I save as I go, as I have lost writing when the screen froze, etc. However, it became obvious, it was also evidence of my very sloppy thinking process from very rough draft, sketchy ideas to something polished and publishable. My standard 8000 words paper usually is completed with around 100 sittings, where I wrote a handful of paragraphs, etc. so I have 100 saves on average. Other pieces have less saves. Most of my papers also start with a diagram that helped me understand the connection I wanted to make. That diagram got refined as I figured out more of what I wanted to write.
