The old adage of "teach to the middle" never really applied, but it was always a way for teachers to focus on what they thought would return the maximum for their efforts. However, we now know, or perhaps always have known, that learners have multiple capability levels, and by designing learning experiences that maximize and engage their desires, outcomes will be greatly improved.

Creating an inclusive classroom isn't just about providing Equality by treating each student the same. To achieve this, you need to provide equity by recognizing and responding to each student's personal conditions and needs.

There are endless ways to differentiate lessons so it's tailored to each student. The difficult part is often in recognizing exactly what not only each student needs, but also what motivates them. Higher student autonomy and co-participation can be integrated in the classroom to leverage students' own awareness of their interests and capabilities. However, it's still crucial to acknowledge that students are different in terms of how responsible and self-aware they are. Lessons therefore need to be structured accordingly.

We must first acknowledge that everyone learns differently, and that there is no such thing as an “average” learner. Each student has a jagged learning profile. To nurture this, we can provide multiple ways to engage students and build motivation, present content through varied ways to support access and understanding, and allow flexible options to demonstrate what they’ve learned.
