The Second Great Awakening was a large religious movement that quickly spread through the United States after 1790. Preachers began rejecting the 18th century Calvinistic belief that God had chosen a predetermined path for everyone and instead encouraged people to find their own path and carve their own way in life. It was a 'revival', an emotional religious meeting meant to reawaken religious faith.

Chloe Norwood

In 1821, Emma Willard had opened the first academically religious school for girls.

The revival spread quickly and attracted much attention. Before 1800, 1 in 15 people were in church and then by 1850, 1 in 6 people were in church. As the influence spread, it reached the African American community because this religious movement believed that all people -white or black- shared the same God. Slaves in the south were allowed in churches with their masters and sang the same hymns as everyone else. Slaves, however, thought of it as a promise of freedom to their people.

Chloe Norwood

Charles Grandison Finney. He is regarded as one of the most famous preachers during this era. When he spoke, people would faint, scream, and cry because of his dramatic sermons. He converted at 29 years old and traveled on horseback to spread his message. When he spoke, he would put the most likely converts on a bench at the front that was dubbed 'the anxious bench'. He used to be a lawyer until he had a religious crisis and went out to find 'God'. Shortly after this religious awakening, he quit his profession and became the preacher we know today.

http://bit.ly/2dzTWOA

Chloe Norwood
