October 25, 2012

When hurricane sandy hit Cuba, it was the strongest force of the storm. Unlike Jamaica, Cuba got the peak of the storms power and got the most damage. The hurricane hit at an approaching category 3 hurricane with wind speeds of 200 miles per hour. The destruction of the hurricane was immense and left thousands of homes destroyed and many homes badly damaged. The storm destroyed their economy and crops witch made it harder for the them to rebuilt their economy and homes for the people. The power of the hurricane made it hard to live in Cuba and leaving the island was nearly impossible. The hurricane took a turn north and proceeded to take a turn to uncertainty.

October 27, 2012

Even though this is not a specific place, the significance of this place has a big factor on how long the storm lasted. When the storm left the tropical islands in the south, the storm proceeded to got north and was predicted to start to die out. The waters on the Atlantic Ocean where warm, with changed the prediction of the storm. Considering the affects of climate change, the warm waters "supercharged" the storm. This increased its power as the storm traveled north towards the United States. Creating destruction for American Citizens when they least expected it.

Local Impact (NOVA)

October 28, 2012

The affects of hurricane Sandy was not as prominent in Northern Virginia because we were not directly hit by the hurricane. Even though we were not directly hit, I remember when the storm hit and we were out of school for almost 2 weeks and lost power for close to 3 weeks. The storm caused alot of destruction to the power lines with caused thousands of homes in the NOVA area to loose power for a somewhat short amount of time compared to the southern tropical places. Sense the Northern Virginia area is a wealthy area, it was easy to fix the damages. In less fortunate countries, they would not be able to fix damages as easily as the weather countries can with means that poorer county are more at risk than others.

October 29, 2012

Sense the storm was supercharged by the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey harder than predicted. New Jersey got hit at a category 1 hurricane with 90 mile per hour winds. The damage to New Jersey was also extremely bad. Totaling in an unbelievable 36.6 billion dollars in damage. The damage was so bad because of the location were the storm hit, it hit on the coastal region of New Jersey and left intense flooding and damage. After the hurricane, New Jersey is mostly rebuild with some empty plots of land where old homes were destroyed. Sense the storm was strengthened by the warm water caused from climate change, it made the impact worse than it had to be affecting New Jersey in a violent yet unexpected way.

October 24, 2012

October 24 was the first day hurricane sandy made its first move. When the storm hit Jamaica, it was only a category 1 hurricane. This may seem small because most country should be able to withstand a category 1 hurricane but, it was extremely problematic for Jamaica because their structures and building are not built like structures in the United States. Rebuilding these structures was something that Jamaica is used to know because they get hit by hurricanes almost annually. Jamaica builds structures, then they get nocked down by the next storm. Jamaica was more fragile to begin with so that is what made the hurricane so impactful to Jamaica.
