Remember to secure two or three piece moulds with rubber mould bands or Duck tape.

Step 2

Fill your jug with slip from the bucket. [It is handy to have two jugs if possible then you can move the mould easily onto an empty jug when drained.]

Step 3

Slowly pour the slip into the mould until it reaches the very top.

Pour any unwanted casting slip back into the bucket, [as the slip can be used by other students]. Saving slip is an important and sustainable way to work.

Step 4
Leave the mould full for approximately 15 minutes, allowing the shell to form. (The time can later be adjusted if you find your finished product is too thick or too thin.) Aim for a wall thickness of 3mm, this is an industry standard.

Step 5

Turn the mould upside down gently and pour away the slip into a jug. Do not shake the slip out of the mould. Leave the mould upside down for 15 minutes resting on a wooden baton.

Please do not leave slip under moulds in jugs as we will soon run out and this is wasteful.

Step 6

Turn your mould the right way up and leave for at least an hour. Consider leaving for 2-3 hours as you do some sketchbook work, this is not a problem as your cast will become firmer the longer you leave.

Your cast will then separate from the mould. It will be safe to remove and strong enough to handle.

Step 7

Manipulate by cutting. Create holes by piercing. Create textures by gently embossing. Try carving into the surface carefully or leave smooth. Try squashing the cast gently to change the form. Finish off by smoothing with a damp sponge. Remember the cast will shrink by 10% in the firing if you need to attach another material eg: a handle, you should calculate.

Step 8

If you want to attach two slip cast forms together, you must cast at the same time, you cannot attach a dry cast to a wet cast, ask Kathleen or Beatrice to help you with this or look at the video below.

Step 9

Please only fire successful pieces. Photograph experiments for your process sheets and recycle after documenting.

Step 10

Place in the allocated area to dry completely before firing.

White Earthenware is a versatile clay with a smooth texture and fires to white. The strength of greenware [unfired] makes fettling [finishing] easy. This clay is stable the firing and tends not to warp. We use white earthenware for the Hollow Project.

Stoneware is a type of ceramic. Earthenware is pottery that has been fired at relatively low temperatures. Although earthenware has a thicker and more rustic look, it is not as strong or as durable as stoneware.

Terracotta is also an earthenware clay and is made out of a fairly coarse, porous type of clay that is high in iron oxides. Terracotta clay is known for it's beautiful red colour.

Porcelain is a ceramic material made by heating clay-type materials to high temperatures. It includes clay in the form of kaolinite. Porcelain is a creamy colour.

Bone china is a type of vitreous, translucent material. It has been defined as ware with a translucent body. Bone china is pure white.

This former student asked his girlfriend to act as a model. He found a local cafe and asked if he could take some photographs of his products early in the morning. He choose a location with a very simple aesthetic. He used a good camera and dropped the background out of focus.
