A symbol that stood out in "The Interlopers" was the tree branch that fell on Ulrich and George, long -time enemies. Without this tree branch, they wouldn't have sorted out their problems and differences in the manner that they did. The tree branch that forced them to get together was in a way, an interloper, or something that got in the way, but unlike the obvious symbol of the wolves, this type of interloper helps the two work things out.

One significant quote in the climax of "The Interlopers" was expressed when Ulrich told his enemy, Georg Znaeyem, "Neighbor, do as you please if your men come first. It was a fair compact. But as for me, I've changed my mind. If my my men are the first to come, you should be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest... (pg 192)" This quote introduces the reader to the theme that was implied in the short story. These words could have ended generations of conflict; unfortunately, the two were killed by wolves before the results could be seen.

Another important quote is from Georg Znaeyem who says, "I never thought to have wanted to do other than hate you all my life, but I think I have changed my mind...you offered me your wine flask...Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend. (pg 192)" This saying is important because it shows how the two men were raised to hate each other due to their conflicting families; it was ever expected that the two would befriend each other. From this quote, the peace formed between the two men was official.

These two quotes supplement each other to make the climax: one filled with emotion.

Explanation

During the climax of "The Interlopers," the two rivals, Ulrich and Georg have a tense conversation while pinned under a fallen tree. As a family feud divided a rigid barrier between the two men, they had never carried out a face-to-face meeting. Now that they were literally forced to stay together, they had their first real discussion. They start to intimidate each other: one would say that his own men would be the first to find the duo. However, their words were simply bluffs. Ulrich and Georg both knew that it was luck would determine whose team would be the first to find them. As their talk drags on, Ulrich begins to think of a brilliant plan: he would befriend Georg who would, in turn, assist him when they were freed. So, if Georg's men were to discover the two in the forest before his own group arrived, he would be safe from any harm that may be inflicted upon him by the enemy. Georg eventually thought of the same idea; they began to overcome the lengthy discord from their past to befriend each other as they lay under the tree branch with plenty of time to bond.

The monkeys that stopped the fight were the interlopers, similar to the tree branch that pinned them down and stopped their long-lasting feud.
