Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor of some sort, but I soon realized that I am not the type to stomach things that make me queasy (such as studying human anatomy). Instead, I found that I can still save a life- but in a different way than surgeons do- I can help others by giving them the right drugs they need. Pharmacy is both a stable and lucrative occupation. I first learned of this career through my cousin's girlfriend, who is currently a pharmacist at CVS. I plan on taking the test to become a pharmaceutical technician or to work as a clerk at a local pharmacy next summer.

Contrary to most occupations, it's actually the newly graduated who are just starting out that make the most money, from $115,000-$125,000 if they work at drug store chains. Supermarket chains have the "widest range for a starting salary, between $92,000 and $125,540. Pay for the newly-hired in the hospital ranged from $92,000 to $122,720; even though they are the most likely to be working more hours than in other fields. During his youth, he moved to London, England, and later studied at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School. His dream of becoming a surgeon soon changed as he came under the influence of bacteriologists in the Inoculation Department at St. Mary's. His interest in this field of science blossomed as he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWI and studied wound infections of war victims. He discovered that antiseptics used on wounds at the time were more harming to the body than they were beneficial- and he sought to find a new way to help heal them. In November of 1921 Fleming discovered lysozyme, an enzyme found in bodily fluids that had a similar antiseptic effect. In 1928, Fleming discovered a type of mold, which would later be isolated and purified to become penicillin- the world's first antibiotic. Background education required for this occupation involves a lot of research and study in and outside of school. But once they begin working, they will need to apply their knowledge to prepare drugs according to prescriptions and advise patients every single day. Pharmacists spend the other half of their time teaching and training others who are new to the job.

• In some areas, people will come in with fake prescriptions for drugs
• As of right now, getting accepted into pharmacy schools and getting hired is highly competitive (drug store chains are now hiring the fewest pharmacists- less than 1% of the total profession)
• Once you get used to the job, it can become very routine-like and tedious 

Positives

• Good income
• Once you are hired, it is a pretty stable job- it is rare to get laid off or fired if you are working for a drug store chain
• I can help others and give back to the community in a sort of indirect way. I'll be able to provide people with the drugs they need to live and give advice to patients

A student must first earn their Bachelor's degree and the following college credits to be enrolled in a degree program at a pharmacy school: biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences. This generally takes about 4 years of college. Once they are accepted into pharmacy school, students must take the required classes in order to obtain a Masters' Degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.).
