Country Music: Outside of my Cultural Milieu

Country music is outside my cultural milieu. I have listen to one or two songs that are country music back when Taylor Swift was composing and singing country music. This music genre is out of my social environment because most of the time I listen to Hispanic songs like reggaetón and pop. Country music does not resemble nothing alike those two type of music genre.

"We Shall be Free"

For this blog, I am going to be analyzing “We Shall be Free” from Garth Brooks. This song talks about equality. He mentions that there should be equality between the poor and the rich. He also said that we should not care about the skin color of people and that the different point of views of people in different topics should be heard. He keeps on repeating “We shall be free” meaning and emphasizing that when these changes than we will see great change and a happier world where everybody gets along. I understand the cultural perspectives because I watched the video while listening to the lyrics.

The Performer

The performer, Garth Brooks, is trying to communicate that he will like to see change. To the performer the song means that he wants to see a positive social change. This song was written in 1992, so about twenty-six years ago, where many people wanted marriage equality, people were and still are fighting for many social changes, such as equality in gender pay, and equality on race. Rolling Stone, writer, Stephen L. Betts said in an article that the phrase “When we’re free to love anyone we choose” proved problematic at a time when homosexuality was still inexorably linked to the AIDS crisis.” It was so problematic that some radio stations decided to prohibit the song.

As for the audience, the performer wants to send the message that in the future should get along. He is trying to make a point to his audience that equality should exist. Many of his audience may not had believe this and probably turn their back on him.

Song Intersection with Real Life Situations

There were a lot of social movements in the United States. One of them was gay marriage. This was really controversial during this time. Racial inequality was studied more and was open more to the eye of the public. Many people believe that AIDS was passed on by gay people. There was a Somali Civil War going on at the time and the United States was trying to help the country in restoring piece. It matter to the national community because the United States was getting involved in conflicts such as the Somalian Civil War. They were sending troops and food to a developing country. As for a global community, they were a lot of countries trying to become independent and a lot of civil wars were breaking out in places like the Middle East and Africa. So “We shall be Free” in my understanding reflects the desire to be free from all this wars and inequalities so we can have a peaceful world. This song influences my understanding of the civic issues at hand because it shows the whole big issues going on in the world and that the artist wants this to end.

I feel like I am a sympathizer because I share the same feelings like the artist. “We shall be free” to have our own believes and to have equal rights.

We have sometimes suffered inequalities as an Hispanic family, but we just let them go because we do not like to speak out. We also have our own cultural values, so there are somethings that we don’t accept from other cultures, such as some type of music genres.
