Brief Reflection of Remember the Titans

In this movie, it begins with a true story regarding a local school board was forced to integrate an all-black school with an all-white school, and explores the process in the integration through high school football, and the challenges they face. Throughout the movie, these groups of football players show how they can bring a town together to realize that these races should not be judged by the color of their skin. Coach Boone, through difficult times himself, goes through a process to turn the high school guys from enemies to brothers. Nonetheless, this movie goes in-depth of racism in the community during the 1970s and the struggles of dealing with the integrated society.

Defining Community:

In my opinion, I define community as a group (of people) who follow a social structure within a society, and surround themselves around that. This can be shown through morals, culture, social norms, etc).

Why Community Influenced Education:

In this movie, I saw that when the schools and the families work together, the children seemed to do better and respect one another better. When schools and families and these community groups work together to support learning or different races, children are more eager to like school more or to interact with one another. For example, in the movie, "Remember the Titans", Lastik, one of the football players, has always struggled with his grades. He was never a C+ average student, and because of it, did not plan on go to college. Yet, because of the help from his coach, he was able to push forward and persevere and attend college. It was shocking to see that Lastik and Coach Boone barely even knew each other, were opposite races despite all the hatred going around at that point in the movie, and able to work together to support learning. I feel like the community, especially with this town, highly impacted the way the guys played football, got along with one another, and the way they were in school. If the group of people, say the student's parents in this school, were more accepting of black people entering the school, the community would get along way smoother, and would not affect any race groups. If they weren't, I do not think the football team would have ever gotten along. It took Gerry Bertier the hardships to realize that everyone should be accepted for the team to work out, or in other things in general throughout the movie.

I found the BCC Foundation, that provides community service opportunities for those living in Berks County. Thus, their mission at BCCF is to promote philanthropy and improve the quality of life for the residents of Berks County, Pennsylvania. Yet, BCCF has been helping individuals, families, and organizations by establishing funds at the Community Foundation that have specific purposes. Charitable funds are raised each year, and the funds are then distributed to grants and scholarships to support students and other organizations. Some resources they provide is being able to start a meeting to request a conversation to see what can be done to help. Additionally, on their website (https://bccf.org/ways-to-give-guidelines/), you are able to apply for a scholarship or a grant, or even make a donation as well.

Faith-Based Organizations: YMCA

In the YMCA, I found and was shocked to find out that the YMCA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, considering it to be a faith-based organization. YMCA focuses on strengthening communities by connecting people to their potential, purpose, and each other. YMCA does a variety of things such as education and leadership programs to those who need it, supporting diverse communities in special projects, and even works for mental and physical health with activities they do. To get involved, YMCA mentions that they rely solely on volunteers for the most part, and want people to work alongside them to strengthen communities.

In the page I found, I learned about Upper Merion township, that provides parks and recreation places to offer a wide range of fitness, recreation, and education programs for all ages. They provide many program sites to refer to and have many partnerships with local community groups, to provide resources for everyone out and near the area. These programs offer a comprehensive Activity Guide that is published and mailed to all residents of the Upper Merion Township community, where they can either register for programs that they are offering or classes online as well for those who need it for their education.

In this website, I found the website for the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments, where people in the community can refer to when trying to link these three things together. To begin, they mention how these three things together can form a shared responsibility and process were students and other families can engage with one another and actively begin their children's development and learning. This website offers a variety of resources for families to look at for guidelines on how to begin on family and community engagement, and and even involvement in education. Some resources that are provided are the events that the center provides, and training and contact information for any questions or concerns families or communities or businesses may have.

Culture/Race as Central Issues: Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations

Exploring for this topic, I found remarkable information regarding culture and race and issues these communities face. In this website, however, people who go through these hardships and difficulties on a day-to-day basis, are able to refer to this website, which has many attachments to psychological associations that build supportive networks for these races. For example, there is listed an "Association of Black Psychologists", where its mission is to achieve the empowerment of the African character and illumination of the African spirit. These resources give these minority groups an outlet to feel supported and accepted. Even if the race is not in these attachments, it is a great way to start learning about other minority groups and what they stand for and learn from one another. To build community, I think this is a great resource to start building a foundation for equality amongst different groups around the globe.

In this resource, I found that is a great tool for Gender Inclusiveness, and also for LGBTQIA+ resources. The Community Renewal Society provides an outlet for those who are apart of the community, and even those who are not and want to learn more about the community. It provides many information regarding how to get involved in LGBTQIA+ issues or to make donations. Also, the website provides blogs and announcements where LGBTQIA+ groups are able to use as a resource to stay engaged in the community. I have never heard of this website before, and I think it is a great way to stay involved if wanting to learn or be apart of the Gender-Inclusive community.
