research shows the ageing population that is increasing much faster than that of the younger generation. This is a cause of concern. Future generations may suffer if this trend continues. We need more young to support the elderly. By right, the ratio of young to elderly should be at the very least be 2:1. If it comes to a point of 1:1 , this is very dangerous and to ensure this never happens, singapore is taking actions to counter this problem.http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/singapore-feeling-impact-rapidly-ageing-population

This is an interview with a working adult who lives with an elderly. Here's a summarised dialogue of the interviewer and interviewee.

Interviewer : Do you think the government is doing enough to help the elderly in Singapore?
Interviewee : Government can improve more. For a start, I think it's sufficient to help this group.
Interviewer : Name me some examples that you think the government should improve on, to help the elderly in Singapore
Interviewee : i think that they can improve on housing, there are some elderly felt that may need to sell their flats, houses. Also,to improve on the facilities in all these housings.
Interviewer: Are you aware that there is this Pioneer Generation Package in Singapore?
Interviewee: Yes
Interviewer: What is your opinion about this package that the government has done? So, some things that the government did, is for example, CHAS. They give subsidy to the elderly.
Interviewee: i think it is important that the government can provide more care to these elderly people, especially once they are at the older age. They will need to see doctor,go to hospital, and i think that the government is doing well in giving them subsidy , but i think this may not be enough as when you grow older, your money will get lesser, so the government should have more benefits for all these, to support and help the elderly people.
Interviewer: Other than the elderly, what do you think can be done to help the younger generation to support the elderly?
Interviewee: I would think that, first of all, they should have more education to educate our younger generation, to let them know at the moment, what is the need of the elderly people, and what the government is doing for them. From there, the government can also organise more events that they can bring the young generation to visit these older people, and to talk to them, find out more of their need. I think that is very important,
Interviewer: What else do you think can be done to help the elderly in terms of,not only the elderly, but also the younger generation? There are some things that the government has done, for example, schools are organising VIA projects so that students can go interact with the elderly in the elderly homes. What else do you think can be done to improve the situation in Singapore such that the problems of an ageing population can be solved effectively and efficiently?
Interviewee: Actually, frankly speaking, this is not a simple issue. The government will have to look into this issue as a project, and it will take a long term to educate the young people, and also i would think that maybe education in this area to educate young people, to let them know the importance of helping. Singapore is a ageing population, there will be more and more older folks coming. I think that now the government is looking into this situation, they are doing quite a good job,
Interviewer: Other than the young generation that are coming up, what else do you think can be done to, for example, the people who will be supporting these elderly, like the children, who have to work, at the same time, take care of the elderly. What do you think can be done to help them manage and balance these situations such that they don't have to be financially burdened ,so that they have time for work and to take care of the elderly?
Interviewee: I think most importantly, is the company that these people work. These companies need to understand and to also give support to what Singapore government is now pushing. I think the companies, for example, can give time off to their employees, especially when needs arise(such as an old age father will need to go to do a diagnosis), The companies should be able to give time off to their employees to do all these. Also, companies should give special leave like elder care. I'm not sure whether if this is popular in Singapore, but in overseas, there is this such thing called elder care, like in Singapore,we have child care. So i think that it will be good if companies can also give elder care to their employees if they have old people at home, so that they can spend time with the older people. I think that is very important. Also, maybe in terms of benefits, if employees stay with their older parents, they can give elder bonus or a relief of their income tax if they are taking care of elder people. Although i know that income tax has elder relief but i think it's not enough. The government can push for more,
Interviewer: I see, thank you for your response. Is there anything that you would like to add?
Interviewee: No,that's all.
Interviewer: Okay, thank you!

Through this project, i managed to learn more about this political issue currently faced by the government. I've done my own research and with the research made by my teammates, i gain new knowledge about the ageing population.I didn't know how serious the situation was until i read a dew studies/surveys. I understand the need to cooperate with the government and always try to support the governments' action towards countering the problem. It is a difficult situation and i need to put myself in their shoes. With one solution, another problem may appear. The interview was rather challenging, with the problem of language barriers and how to deliver an intended message to them may be difficult . Thankfully, my group is made up of those that speak similar language with the elderly. Hence , we managed to conduct an interview successfully ! This project has widened my horizons. I am well aware that these are problems that definitely will affect such 1st world country such as Singapore. I now realise the importance of giving a thought about political issues as it may affect the future we live in. I have become more curious in understanding such political issue.

I do think that investigating the issue through doing my own research has been very helpful in making me understand this topic better. As this project focuses on elderly and provision of healthcare, i was able to find out more about the topic through researching online, reading newspaper articles and statistics. I found out new information which widens my knowledge about elderly in Singapore and the impacts of ageing population that we are currently facing. Reading newspaper articles which have a higher difficulty understanding actually enables me to improve my English vocabulary. Also, as my group members shares their own respective findings, i was able to gain even more knowledge which i did not know about.
I had a meaningful time conducting interview. Besides just looking at a brightly lit screen and finding out information, i was fortunate to be able to conduct a interview in reality and find out even more details about the interviewee's opinions on the impacts of ageing population. My group and I had to discuss the questions to enquire the interviewee such that we can find out more about the issue investigation question. i can say that all of us are very considerate ; we listened to each other's ideas and provide feedbacks to each other. Luckily for us, there was no language barriers as my group and I were able to converse in English with the interviewee, but initially it was awkward for some of us as we had never met the interviewee before. However, as the interview passed, we were able to clear the awkwardness air between us, and soon, we were chatting happily. It was definitely a great takeaway for me as i gained new knowledge through the interviewee, i was able to understand that different people have different perspective and views about ageing population
This Social Studies group project has arose my interest about issues and government policies in Singapore. I was interested to find out more about the implementations that the governments had implemented to tackle ageing population and to help elderly cope with old age. i am more aware about elderly and i appreciate them more now than i used to as they are a community of people that contributed to the society in one way or another.
This project allows me to bond with my group mates whom i had just known this year, which is a good platform to let me know them slightly better. Overall, this project is a meaningful experience!

As the number of elderly increases, there will be an increase in the demand of healthcare centers and services because when a person ages, their body becomes frail and becomes prone to all types of illnesses. The government has taken this situation into account and have started to build more hospitals and polyclinics with advanced facilities to cope with the increasing number of elderly. The government has also introduced health packages like the CHAS for Pioneer Generation which subsidies a large amount for the elderly to visit the doctor so that the elderly who no longer have a source of income or whom had been abandoned by their children would be able to afford medical attention and need not worry about having not enough money. For more information about the CHAS for the Pioneer Generation https://www.chas.sg/content.aspx?id=636
