I got to experience not one, but two in-person author visits during my time at CES - Kwame Alexander and Dan Yaccarino. For both events, I helped with book sales, promotional materials, and coordinating student and parent volunteers to help with decorations. Prior to the Dan Yaccarino event, we met with the grades (Kindergarten - 3rd) to read and discuss his works. The students, especially 2nd and 3rd, were then really excited and engaged in the visit and came prepared with great questions for Dan. These two events were a lot of prep-work for such a short visit, but it was really amazing to see students, parents, and admin engaged in the event.

For author events, my FE librarian coordinates with a local bookstore to sell books for the author or illustrator to sign. Families can order the books in advance and then she places the order with the store, sorts them, and have the author or illustrator sign the books prior to the event. This is the order form that I created for the Dan Yaccarino visit. Pre-selling the books really engages the families and makes the day-of run a lot smoother.

Kwame Book Sales

The Kwame Alexander event was scheduled last minute, so I helped to coordinate with three local bookstores to obtain copies of his works to sell at the event. This required a lot of organization and attention to detail as we had to track sales from each individual bookstore so that unsold books could be returned and separate POs could be made. I created this tracker and was in charge of calculating all of the sales and final amounts. I learned that several bookstores are willing to work with school libraries and that relationship is important for last-minute events or needs such as this. Kwame was nice enough to also sign some unsold copies for us to return to the bookstore, which really helped to strengthen the relationships.

This is the presentation that I created for 4th grade. The students were a bit confused at first but then had a laugh when I told that that this is how computers looked when I was their age. The presentation helped to guide the activity and conversation.

For 3rd grade, I edited the presentation from 4th to fit my new lesson plan. Again, I think the presentation helped to guide the conversation though I wish I had thought of a way to capture the student's thoughts and ideas, either through chart paper or sticky notes or a digital collection tool like Jamboard.

As part of Digital Citizenship Week, I offered to host an introductory lesson on Digital Citizenship. A 4th grade and 3rd grade class took me up on the offer. I had 4th grade first and based a lesson on some of the information and plans from Common Sense Media. While it was a successful lesson, there were some things that I reflected on to change for 3rd grade. With those changes, I think the 3rd grade lesson was more successful. I wish I had had more time with the students, even potentially a 30 minute lesson every day for the week, because the discussions were so rich and the students were actively participating but we ran out of time.

On the second day of "Misty the Cloud", students came by homeroom to the library to make their own Cloud Feelings Book. To help with time management, I made and printed the sentence starters so students just needed to finish the sentences, cut, and glue. Students were then given cotton balls to form into their clouds and were encouraged to color and decorate their pages. We then had a few students share out. This lesson combined SEL skills, Science, and ELA.

In preparation for a virtual visit with the author, Dylan Dreyer, students first listened to a read aloud of "Misty the Cloud." This is a great book that ties in SEL, Science, and ELA. One of the Social Workers came to help with the read aloud and guided students through some questions on feelings as we read while I focused on Science and noticings. Before she left, she led the students through a quick mindful "wiggle break" as I had observed with 1st grade that they need some sort of break in the middle or they stop paying attention. After she left, I launched into a small unit about clouds to help prepare students for the next day where they would make their own cloud books.

On the third day, the 1st graders came together as a grade once again for a virtual author visit with Dylan Dreyer. This was coordinated through a local bookstore (the one where my FE Librarian orders her books from). Dylan read the book and then answered some questions submitted by students in the audience. We learned that Dylan also went to Rutgers and the students were excited to hear that I am also in school at Rutgers!
