When the Nazis invaded Haarlem the girls would be recruited to join the Haarlem Resistance Group in 1941. In the resistance Freddie and Truus learned to shoot Nazis and sabotage bridges and railway lines. After Truus seduced an officer, lured him into the woods, and had a resister shoot him, the sisters would go on assassination missions together—targeting Dutch collaborators who’d endanger Jews and resistance members.

The trio would continue to sabotage and assassinate Nazis. Hannie quickly became one of the most wanted enemy of the Nazis, gaining the name “The Girl with the Red Hair.” After a Nazi in disguise found out Hannie’s name, Nazis arrested her parents and forced them into a concentration camp causing Hannie to momentarily stop her work. Hannie would then dye her hair black and resume her missions, only to be caught and arrested on March 21, 1945. Interrogation and torture would soon follow after. Nazi’s identified her as Hannie Schaft due to her red roots and was killed three weeks before the war would end. She was 24. The sisters would mourn the lost of Hannie—having her been their best friend.
