Beowulf, Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight retold by Jessie L. Weston show that society's ideal characteristics of a hero have shifted from someone extremely full of confidence and self-pride to someone with great humility, though both characteristics allow the reader "to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them, and view the world from their perspective."

In this period of time, talking oneself up was a common trait of a hero and almost admired. People needed to describe their greatness to convince people of their competence. Though now that may be looked now upon, humans today can relate because every person has something they think they are really good at and would be happy to gloat about. His arrogance allows readers to recognize their own pride and see that others may need to talk themselves in order to feel truly good about themselves.

Great ideas, Ana. I'm wondering if the shift you're talking about is not more similar than different, though. "Someone who has determination and wants independence" is also "arrogant and confident" as we see with Brutus, Caesar, and Cassius and even Satan. How else can you characterize this shift?
