Mattel Gives Barbie New Body Shapes

Barbie is finally a modern woman.

Mattel on Thursday announced a sweeping change to the iconic 57-year-old doll. For the first time ever, Barbie will feature three new body types in addition to the slender, busty doll that is well known today. The new body types are described as “tall, curvy and petite.” The change is so significant, it commanded the attention of Fortune sister publication Time, which wrote a cover story on the news.

“Barbie reflects the world girls see around them,” Mattel (MAT) President and CEO Richard Dickson said in a statement. “Her ability to evolve and grow with the times, while staying true to her spirit, is central to why Barbie is the number one fashion doll in the world.”

That has always been the allure of Barbie. When the doll debuted to skeptical toy buyers at the annual New York City Toy Fair in 1959 with a broad mandate about what makes Barbie special. Creator Ruth Handler said the whole idea was that through Barbie, “the little girl could be anything she wanted to be.” As an aspirational doll with hundreds of jobs and styles throughout the decades, Barbie was touted for its broad appeal.

But for too long, Barbie’s physical appearance stuck with a familiar script: white, thin, and with a big bust.

Related

Barbie’s New High-Tech Dreamhouse Totally Ruined Christmas

With sales of the doll plummeting (dropping 20% from 2012 to 2014), Mattel clearly had to make a move to make the beloved yet at times, controversial doll relevant for the 2016 audience. Last year, Mattel generated praise when it announced that the 2015 collection would feature eight different skin tones and over a dozen different hairstyles, a line that also featured bendable ankles for the first time so that Barbie could wear flats.

The look of Barbie has evolved over the decades but the changes the past two years have been by far the most dramatic. While Barbie’s smile, facial features and blonde hair have all changed slightly, she’s always been slender. In the doll aisle, the extremely slender look is also popular for other key properties that are hot sellers today, including Mattel’s Monster High line and the Disney (DIS) Princess characters that are now made by rival Hasbro (HAS).

Close Modal Dialog

This is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button.

Share: Will a high-tech makeover help Barbie?

Mattel will introduce a new version of the iconic doll that can listen and respond to spoken words.

The thinness of the doll has generated a fair bit of criticism, especially in recent years, as critics claim that it advocates unrealistic beauty standards. In fact, in the book “Ken and Barbie at Life Size,” it was alleged that only one in 100,000 women actually match Barbie’s old body image.

Though Mattel is late to the party when it comes to making Barbie more modern, it should be commended for finally acknowledging that girls today are very different than girls of the past. While children have always varied in size, obesity now affects one out of six children and adolescents in the U.S. And the majority of babies born in the U.S. today are now minorities.

For Barbie to resonate with an increasingly diverse audience, it simply had to change. And because Monster high and Disney Princess dolls are still slender, she now stands out in a unique way for the first time.

That could potentially help result in a sales jolt. Barbie has faced pressure in the doll aisle amid the popularity of Disney’s Frozen line, as young children have pined for Elsa and Anna dolls. Sales for Barbie have dropped for three straight years and are on pace to decline for a fourth in 2015. In the first nine months of that year, gross sales slipped 15% to $578.3 million, though Mattel says retail sales are actually increasing. Some analysts are bullish that a turnaround could soon help lift Mattel’s stock.

Barbie’s new “Fashionistas” doll line will not only feature four body types, but also seven skin tones and 24 different hairstyles. The new dollars are available to order online today in the U.S. and will start shipping to major toy retailers in the spring.

“We believe we have a responsibility to girls and parents to reflect a broader view of beauty,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of Barbie.

Barbie was born on the March 9, 1959, the day she was officially launched at the American International Toy Fair. Created by businesswoman Ruth Handler to show little girls that they could be anything they wanted to be, that ‘a woman has choices’, Barbie quickly became a global icon. While she may not have visibly aged over the last five decades, Barbie has constantly reinvented herself, changing her clothes to keep up with the latest fashions and adapting her image in response to wider social and cultural change with varying degrees of success. Barbie’s evolution has been controversial at times, but before we get into her inspirational triumphs and contentious fails, we need to take a look back at her long and fascinating history. Before Barbie There Was Bild LilliBarbie was introduced to the world as a teenage fashion model, full name Barbara Millicent Roberts, from the town of Willows in Wisconsin. But Barbie’s predecessor, the Swiss Bild Lilli doll, had an image that wasn’t quite as clean cut. Unlike other dolls of the time made to resemble babies and infants, Bild Lilli was all woman with long legs, fashionable clothes and glamorous make-up. Based on a comic strip character, Lilli was a working girl, described as a ‘blonde bombshell’, and Lilli dolls were initially sold as an adult novelty.Handler came across the doll while vacationing in Switzerland in 1956 and immediately recognized the potential market for a doll that could be dressed in the latest fashions and imagined fulfilling adult roles and careers. She brought three Lilli dolls back to the USA, and over the next few years worked with Mattel, the toy company co-founded by her husband Eliot, to design and create the first Barbie doll.1950s: #1 Ponytail Barbie is BornInfluenced by the movie stars of the 1950s, the first Barbie doll was fully made up with red lips, black eyeliner and perfectly arched eyebrows. She wore a strapless zebra striped swimsuit and came with either blonde or brunette hair done up in a cute Audrey Hepburn ponytail. #1 Ponytail Barbie, as she was known, sold for $3 (the equivalent of $24.55 in 2016), and in the first year of production, over 300,000 Barbie dolls were sold.#1 Ponytail Barbie | © wiki commons#1 Ponytail Barbie | © LadyRachele/WikiCommons1960s:Mod Barbie Meets Ken, Moves into Her Dream House and Starts BabysittingA decade that opened with JFK in the White House and closed with Nixon, the ’60s were a period of major social and political transformation in America. Barbie evolved with the times, and by 1960, her fashion sense had moved away from the brittle and bouffant styling of the 50s, epitomized by First Lady Jackie Kennedy, and had begun to embrace the playful and colorful Mod era.Barbie’s makeup became less severe and her hair became long and sleek. For the first time, Barbie became available with ‘Titian’ red hair, bendable legs and eyes that opened and closed. While Barbie’s physical transformation was striking, her lifestyle changes were no less distinct. In 1961, Barbie began going steady with boyfriend Ken, and in 1962, the pair moved into their very own dream house. With a new home and a new man, Barbie also found herself inundated with new friends and family, including lifelong best friend Midge and little sister Skipper. In 1967, Mattel debuted ‘Colored Francie’ the first African-American doll to enter Barbie’s network of friends. Both Francie and Christie, who followed just a year later, were manufactured with dark skin, but designers used the same mold as that it used for ‘Caucasian Barbie’, meaning all of the dolls had the exact same facial features.Barbie’s first major controversy came in 1963 with the introduction of ‘Barbie Baby-Sits’. Wearing a long pink-striped skirt with ‘babysitter’ emblazoned along the hem and thick-framed glasses, Barbie Baby-Sits came with a number of accessories, including a baby in a crib, a telephone, a few bottles of soda and a book. Unfortunately, the book was called How to Lose Weight and had only one page of advice, ‘Don’t Eat’. The backlash from this bizarre nod to extreme dieting wasn’t enough to deter Mattel from including the book in the accessories pack of another Barbie doll in 1965. ‘Slumber Party Barbie’ wore pink silk pajamas with a matching robe and came prepared for her sleepover with toiletries, a mirror, the same diet book and a set of scales permanently set at 110 pounds.
