They were very young teenage girls only two years apart. They lived in the Netherlands in the city of Haarlem with their single working mother. Their mother was a communist and taught Freddie and Truus to fight against injustice. In 1939 during the war in Europe they took in Jewish refugees into their home.
Freddie and her sister decided to joined their mother in distributing anti-Nazi newspapers and pamphlets in acts for resistance. They Would  sabotaged bridges and rail lines with dynamite, shoot Nazis while riding their bikes, and donned disguises to smuggle Jewish children across the country and sometimes out of concentration camps.
