3. Shirin and her brother Navid, share a love of this movie "Breakin" about break dancing. Later on her brother Navid decides that he and her are going to start a break dancing club with some of his friends, and that is what they do.

This moment is significant to the plot of the story because this is one of the only things that Shirin really expresses her passion and love towards at this point in the novel. She expresses love towards break dancing and how she isn't afraid to put in hard work and effort, and really wants to "become a b-girl in the full sense of the world. It would be so much better to be called a b-girl, a break dancer." (75)

4. During her Global Perspectives class her teacher has her and a classmate come to the front of the class and say what they see when they look at each other. Her classmate reveals that when he looks at her he sees nothing, and it is like she doesn't even exist. She runs out of the class, and Ocean follows her. They ditch school together and go to IHOP.

This causes Shirin to become furious at her teacher. She becomes very offended that her teacher would put her in that position. This moment also shows how Ocean cares about her, because he follows her out of the class, and convinces her to go to IHOP together, leading to the first real interaction between them. Due to the cause of all of these events, it lead to her and Ocean becoming much closer together, and this is the first real moment that Shirin lets her guard down and opens up.

5. Talking with Navid, Jacobi, Bijan, and Carlos. Shirin asks her brother and her break-dancing mates if she's pretty but then they tell her that she's scary and mean. They tell her that she gives "assholes" too much power over her life.

Shirin never was told that she was pretty, and her brother an her friends tell her that she's scary and doesn't allow people to get close to her. Jacobi acknowledges her pain but offers her advice as well. This is a significant moment because it's the first time acknowledged literally that the reason she acts angry and avoids people is because she's scared of being hurt by others. What Jacobi said actually broke through to her because he told her that preventing herself from being happy is giving the bullies and bigots exactly what they want.

6. Shirin was made out to be an example of stereotyping and assumptions in her global perspectives class, so she hasn't been attending that class. Mr. Jordan, the teacher, come up to her an apologizes. She explains to him why it's so upsetting and how frustrating it is t have to deal with bigots.

This moment is significant to the plot because she explains to Mr. Jordan how annoying it is to constantly deal with people's racism and bigotry. She explains that it's not her job to have to explain things because people are ignorant and refuse to educate themselves. This is important because it's the first time she explains how exhausting it is to deal with people, and it also marks the beginning of things getting rougher with her relationship with Ocean and her peers.

When she moves to her new high school, she has to deal with offensive remarks and ignorant teachers / students. Throughout the day she deals with students saying racist things to her and teachers who make her seem out of place. She does not want to get together with him because she is too worried about affecting him at school, and his future, and she is worried about what people think. Ocean continues to try and convince her that he wants to be with her, and he does not care what people think, which sort of makes Shirin think that they maybe would be able to get together.

First of all this is important because break dancing is metaphorically kind of like her doing thing's she wants to do despite what others say. She's able to do break dancing, but she's distant from Ocean because she's letting the fear of people tearing apart their relationship. Additionally it also shows how Ocean is eager to let Shirin get to know him and get closer to her, and Shirin wants the same but she's letting her fear and the opinions of others control her choices.

Shirin stands up for herself and tells her that just because she wears a hijab and religious doesn't mean that she isn't allowed to be human. She says this and yet she doesn't really allow herself to be herself. Additionally it adds to the idea of the plot with ignorant people. Unlike other people his interaction is different because even someone with similar background to Shirin, she still criticizes her. This plays at the idea that people of color have different experiences, and this interaction has a large effect on Shirin.

This is the first time him and Shirin talk in the story and it ends with her turning back on her music and continuing her day. This moment is significant because Ocean is another main character in the book and them encountering each other is the start of their story.

On the second day of arriving together at school, someone insults Shirin by telling Ocean "Why're you f*cking around with Aladdin over here, bro" (236)? Shirin is irritated by this remark but decides not to say anything. Someone then proceeds to throw a cinnamon roll at her face and this is when Ocean steps in and Shirin runs off to the bathroom. When she gets to the restroom, she takes off her hijab to get the icing off and a girl tells her hey, so when Shirin looks up the girl snaps a picture of her. This is significant because the picture goes around campus and now everybody has seen Shirin without her hair and it shows that Ocean and Shirin can't have a normal relationship because everybody around them is so caught up with how they feel and their beliefs.

He starts to scream at Shirin saying that she is going to ruin Ocean's chances in basketball and that she's a distraction. He scares her and she feels like she has no power. When she's on her way home from school, Ocean's mom talks to her. She reveals that she never had any money for Ocean and that she is depending on him getting a scholarship. Shirin doesn't want to break up with him but she fears for his future and feels like she has to leave him in order for him to get the future everyone wants him to have. He doesn't really care about basketball, but everyone else depends on him to win and succeed. So, Shirin does what she thinks is best and breaks up with him.

This quote is significant because it's symbolic of letting herself do something she wants regardless of what people's opinions are. The school reacts very fondly and she becomes more than just a girl who wears a hijab. This is also symbolic of her beating the bullies and haters and focusing on her own happiness. This also shows the hypocrisy of people in this story as well as how fast the can forget about their racism and cruelty.
