History Group Essay Question: How far did Japanese Occupation change the lives of teenagers?

We can infer that the Japanese occupation had changed the teenagers lives greatly.

Before the Japanese Occupation, some teenagers worked as coolies to support their families. While during the Japanese Occupation, many of the males were taken away and forced to work on the Death Railway for food. This shows how it changed from them being granted freedom to them being forced to work for food.

Before 1942, one of the teengare’s entertainment was Happy world, having fun and enjoying themselves but once the Japanese occupation started, all was lost. Happy World turned into a gambling farm. I think that it had really changed part of their everyday lives.

The food pricings were significantly cheaper. However, as the Japanese printed an excessive amount of notes, there was an in the pricings. They also received less food as there was a scarcity of it and had to travel far and was time consuming. These shows that food was much harder to get, be it in terms of pricing or time and the teenagers could have restricted food supply for themselves.

Previously, only male teenagers were required to take part in education. It was showed in the English school and school libraries before WWII. This was in one of the British first’s school policy. However, during 1942, education was essential for both males and females had to take part in studies. Therefore, I can say that the teenagers had changed in school life as they had to learn in Japanese and the females would have to study.

Therefore, we can conclude that the occupation had changed them extensively.
