I wanted the structure to be relatively simple because this was our first project. From there, I really liked the idea of having a sea otter (one of my favorite animals ever) hugging the container. I was nervous about how to go about it so I just threw myself into it and tried what worked and didn't. I used a stencil that would allow to to create the shape that I wanted. First, I rolled out a piece of clay, took the stencil and put it on top, and then cut out the shape. Next, I cut the ends so that it would perfectly connect and slipped and scored them together. Then, I roughly measured how big of a bottom circle that would be needed to fit the shape of the mug. From that strip, I took the top part of it and slip-and-scored it to the top of the mug and then connected the bottom part of the clay strip, to the bottom area of the mug.
