The author's purpose was to inform, what was happening in the concentration camp. They transfer  Elie Wiesel to another'' kommando, the construction one where twelve hours a day I hauled heavy slabs of stone'' says Elie Wiesel in second paragraph line 7 to line 8.it's a detail that help us to draw this conclusion.

The author is trying to say that, the SS were offering them a beautiful present for the new year but, the really mean of a ''beautiful present'' is death.
