“Would you be open to visiting me?," “Should I call my father back? As Summer finds out that her dad has another family in France, these are the “hard decisions” she has to make. All she thought of her father, turned out to be one big lie. She's had to face the choices of what might come next in her relationship with her dad. Ned, Summer’s father, has shown that with the effort he has put in, he is worthy to gain her trust once again. Summer should learn to forgive and at the very least try to move on from the mistakes he’s made. Ned thrives to be the father that both his daughters need, and in order to do so, he works hard in exchange for both his daughters' trust. Potentially when and if Summer gets to know who her father really is, she may be able to finally say ‘goodbye’ to the past and start a new chapter in her life. If Summer does forgive her dad, it could change her whole life in the most positive way possible; a new friendship could be born and an unbreakable father-and -daughter bond would be developed.

Even though Summer's dad did something awful to Summer and her family, you can see that her dad is trying his best to make up for it. As shown on page 348, the author writes, "Unlike his visits past, there was no fleeting lunches and calls of 'Bye, sweetheart!' as he dashed off. No. Instead, we'd sat and talked for hours over burgers... Mom had even invited Dad to the house... once she saw Dad making an effort." This shows that instead of a quick phone call, he stayed and talked for hours, face to face, to gain Summer's trust and friendship. In addition, on page 342, the author states, "He'd like to come to Hudsonville...He said he wanted to spend more time with you...." This means that her dad is willing to fly all the way to Hudsonville from France just to see his daughter face to face, and make things right. Within the time that Ned spends with Summer, he could be working on more paintings, but instead, he wants to go, spend time, and money on a plane ticket, to be friends with his daughter. Ned is a worthy father, because even though he has a prestigious job as an artist, he is willing to make room and time to be friends his daughter.

One reason why Summer should trust her dad again, is the fact that Summer's dad apologized to Summer. According to page 310, " I know an apology goes so far... but I'd like for you to be able to trust me again." In other words, Summer's dad would want to build back their relationship. During Ned's phone call with Summer, he broke down into tears, because he knew that what he did, was so wrong. It is obvious that Ned's intentions are good, and his apology was genuine. Ned seemed like he was really putting a lot of effort into being friends with Summer, and it is clear that Ned won't make the same mistake of betraying Summer ever again. For the better, Summer should forgive and trust her dad.

Some readers may argue that Summer's dad, Ned, betrayed Summer, since he had another family. However, even though Summer's dad did something very wrong, he tried redeeming himself. Ned offered Summer a trip all the way to France, just so Ned could tell her the truth face to face. In addition, Ned is equally concerned and worried about Summer, as his other family. On page 321, Vivienne says, "Your father, he was frantic... I told him to wait until morning to get you. He did not sleep all the night." This shows that Ned was so anxious and concerned about Summer, that he stayed up all night worrying, even though he knew she was somewhere safe. Overall, although Ned betrayed Summer, he apologized, was willing to visit to work out everything, and Ned cares about Summer a lot. Ned has proven to be a worthy father. Using all the evidence above, there is valid proof on why Summer should forgive and trust her father again.

Overall, there are various reasons to why Summer should accept Ned’s apologies, when she feels the timing is right and his intentions are good. It is important for Summer to forgive her dad, because if she holds a grudge against her father, it would do more harm to herself than him. By relieving herself of the rage she feels towards her father, she can finally move on with her life and repair the damage that has been done to her family. Step by step, day by day, Ned is beginning to earn her trust and on the other hand, Summer’s mom is realizing that he is going to be loyal to Summer and be very careful for what he does in his relationship with both his daughters. It is evident that Ned is putting in more effort into repairing this broken relationship, than he ever has before. Going back to the beginning and answering these questions, if Summer does make the decision to listen to what her father has to say, she could be choosing a path toward happiness. After everything their family has gone through together and apart, if Summer apologizes to Ned, they are changing for the sake of the family to be more understanding, forgiving, and to earn what they just might deserve.
