A project that helped me develop a new skill was the hybrid sculpture. The proportions of my hybrid creature were difficult map out, I was unsure of how realistic the creature would turn out to look. Luckily, this hybrid creature was meant to act as a creature I invented, giving me a little bit of room for error, although the proportions on my creature did not go exactly as I had planned it to go, I am still satisfied with the final product. My preplanning skills were also put to the test in my watercolour landscape, I did plan for a bigger painting and should have considered all the space that the tape would take up on the page.

 

Pursuit:

 

The mixed media piece tittles Compliments did not look too promising before I added details and turned the piece into a collage. The two sketches did not mirror each other enough, leading me to believe that there wouldn’t be unity in the collage. I was planning on letting both images mirror each other in the collage, using a dark and light construction paper respectively, allowing the pieces to look more related. After cutting half of each face, I noticed something that led me into the name of this piece, one face had an eye that was looking down while the other seemed neutral. I felt like the pieces could work together to form emotions that told a story. Compliments, the way we feel when we receive them, and the emotions that go through our heads when we do not. What I imagined at first to be a big error in my piece was the component I needed to convey a much stronger message.  

 

Inventiveness:

 

The stamping series had to be one of my favourite projects this semester. The possibilities using this form of printmaking is endless. With every addition of paint, I could imagine an invention, even the accidental drops of paint were meaningful in this process and added another aspect into the piece. The piece titled The Garden was unexpected choice for me to edit, draft, and title as my final piece in the stamping series. The colours I chose before stamping were my least favourite combination of colours, however, I immediately saw a beautiful image. It was such a peaceful blend of colours, this piece brought me warmth and on a cold winter day. 

 

Expressiveness:

 

The Mona Lisa series was one of the most expressive pieces I have completed this semester. When the class was instructed to compose their own Mona Lisa the idea of drawing myself as a Mona Lisa came to me almost instinctively. The thought of never seeing anyone draw a hijabi Mona Lisa inspired me to go with my idea even more. The choice of that Mona Lisa’s placement was also very easy for me to choose, the background had to be one that I would be seated in front of, in front of Edmonton’s’ Waterdale bridge on a snowy Monday afternoon.
