In Malcolm Gladwell's, The Satire Paradox, he says, "that satire works best when the satire is not afraid to go after the critique". This comic mocks the police force that is in power. This comic shows the true feelings of this society. They feel as though the government and police are criminals and deserve to be treated as such. How can the police be trusted when they are criminals themselves? This is the message that this comic is trying to convey and it fits very well in Malcolm Gladwell's idea of A Satire Paradox.

A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift

A Modest Proposal outlines Jonathan Swift's solution to the power imbalance and poverty crisis in 18th century Ireland. His main solution was for the parents to eat their children on their first birthday. Eating their children would help spare the parents of the financial burden of keeping children alive. In The Modest Proposal, Swift uses satire to attract attention to the horrors the Irish people must have been facing if they had sourced out all their options other than eating their own children.

The clip from Family Guy exemplifies that money is highly valued in the western world. The character has a spinal injury and without a $200,000 surgery, he will not be able to walk again. The insurance company denied the $200,000 surgery and instead settled for a $60 wheel chair. Satire is using dark humour, irony, and mockery to criticize a pressing issue. The United States does not have universal healthcare and one's life is in the hands of their insurance company. Family Guy is addressing the overall issue of healthcare by attempting to be light hearted and funny.

The Handmaid's Tale By Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood's, The Handmaid's Tale, is a dystopian novel that includes pieces of information throughout history. A dystopia, according to the Oxford dictionary, "is an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one". The Republic of Gilead is the dystopia in which The Handmaid's Tale takes place. Gilead took over the United Sates and became a society that destroyed women's rights and made women slaves to their own body. Handmaids were kept in society to provide children for the "Commander" and his wife. Atwood uses satire throughout the novel to show her discontentment with her current society. Atwood also demonstrates the fate of the western world should society not learn from past experiences involving sexism and racism.

Gladwell and Atwood

A paradox, according to Webster Dictionary is, "a statement that is seemingly absurd or self contradictory that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true". Malcolm Gladwell's, A Satire Paradox, describes the push and pull of what intellectually we know versus what we feel. Satire is complicated and must answer many questions, but at the same time the satirizer must not be afraid to walk the hard path to a better world. I believe Margaret Atwood's, The Handmaid's Tale, follows the same satirical path as Jonathan Swift's The Modest Proposal. The ideas are so contrary to our ideal lives, yet could apply to our society and I believe that both authors effectively used satire to highlight the society and people that they wished to criticize. Atwood's dystopia is futuristic and yet draws from historical tragedies and misfortunes. This is a paradox and Atwood uses satire to explain it; therefore it is the perfect satirical paradox.
