Mary McCauly (Molly Pitcher) is very well known. She played a very important and vital role in the 1778 Battle of Monmouth (N.J), which was and Continental Army camp follower. Like most women in the 1700's, Molly would bring water to the soldiers that needed water. Sometimes, she had to bring water for the cannons itself! The way she got her nickname, Molly Pitcher, because soldiers in battle will yell
"Molly! Pitcher!". In her times, many called women named Mary Molly. Molly became well known while the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse was happening. Her husband collapsed in battler from the 100 degree temperature, or being hurt by the enemy. While he was on the ground, Mary took her husband's place as a gunner and shot with the cannon, without anyone's else. Legend says that one cannon went in between her skirt, and she said "Well that could have been worse".

Bib
Molly Pitcher Biography For Kids,
