"With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change" (Page 30).
-
Throughout the novel the color yellow tends to symbolize things that they are not. When Myrtle puts on the yellow dress her personality shifts and makes her act like someone who she is not. This motif is carried throughout the novel by reflecting yellow and it's dishonest connotation.

"She held my hand impersonally, as a promise that she'd take care of me in a minute, and gave ear to two girls in twin yellow dresses, who stopped at the foot of the steps" (page 42).
-
The yellow illustrates the type of people that were going to these parties. These women were very shallow and didn't even know Gatsby, however they were there in order to show off their wealth.

"A pair of stage twins, who turned out to be the girls in yellow, did a baby act in costume, and champagne was served in glasses bigger and finger-bowls" (Page 46).
-
Nick describes these girls to have golden personalities, which means the color yellow is symbolic to who they are as people. By describing them as 'golden' he is ultimately saying that they are defined by their wants and needs.

"'It was a yellow car,' he said, 'big yellow car. New'" (Page 139).
-
Gatsby bought an entire new car simply to make himself appear better than he truly is. He did this to give off the illusion that he is wealthy, which he is, but that he is so wealthy that it is no big deal. This carries the common motif that yellow is symbolic to money and wealth.

Most of the people at the party weren't even invited, however they show up because they believe that they are entitled to it.

In conclusion, yellow symbolizes wealth and material possessions. Fitzgerald carries this motif throughout the novel by correlating yellow to all things financial and status based. He does this to give readers a better understanding on how important class was during the 1920's.
