I chose to post this photo of the muralist at work because I love seeing the HOW of making a mural, and it's size against the size of the artist. It makes me appreciate their vision and the work it takes to realize a public mural.
Longtime muralist and activist Juana Alicia Araiza works on "Spill/Derrame," which deals with environmental degradation and her recovery from cancer. The social movement most aligned with this artwork is the climate justice movement, and divestment from the fossil fuel industry.
There was an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon Macondo oil well drilling platform that started the largest marine oil spill in maritime history at the time, dumping 4.2 million barrels of oil. Officials subsequently released 1.8 million gallons of Corexit, a chemical dispersant used to break up the oil in the Gulf before the well was sealed. Juana says, "I was deeply disturbed by this event, as I spend much of my life enjoying, admiring and being nurtured by those Gulf waters, in the small village of Telchác, Yucatán, Mexico."
There's a surrealist element to this work- machinery mixed with forces and creatures of nature, the open mouth of the skeleton referencing maybe both a dystopian La Calavera Catrina and Edvard Munch's "The Scream."
Legally an oil corporation has nearly all the same rights as individuals. The oil flowing from the scull's eye & mouth sockets screams culpability, but also human despair and our need for release of emotions in the face of this kind of disaster. If I look at it analytically, her use of color and movement gives me cognitive dissonance because it plays with the beauty of rainbows & water in the context of horror.

Upon observing the mural depicting the struggles of these inspiring individuals, several meaningful aspects comes to mind. These historical leaders, including Bob Marely, Che Guevara, Frida Kahlo, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Muhammad Ali, and Ms. Broussard, stand out as icons of minority history. What’s particularly compelling about the mural is its unique and powerful title, “Beautiful Struggles,” which resonates with the stories of each prominent figure as they overcame personal challenges in their lives to become the celebrated individuals they are today.

Additionally, the diversity represented within the mural is striking. As I gazed upon the prominent figures depicted, it became evident that the mural cover a wide range of social movements. Bob Marley embodies social justice, Che Guevara symbolizes revolution, Frida Kahlo signifies Mexican identity, Malcolm X represents the Black Power movement, Martin Luther King embodies the Civil Rights movements, Ms. Broussard embodies Social Arts, and Muhammads Ali stands for racial justice. This combination of social movements within the murals represents the interconnectedness and influence of these historical figures on various aspects of societal progress.

Based on this mural, I can identify four of the Seven Elements of Arts: line, shape color, and value, First, the lines in the artwork are evident in the flowers, grass, public figures and text. These line vary in thickness and thinness, creating a diverse range of visual elements, Second, various shapes are present in the background, including blocks, flowers, and peace signs, Many of these shapes have outlines, and some are presented as 2D imagines, incorporating both positive and negativities space. Third, the mural uses a wide array of colors and lighting effects throughout the composition. Finally, the concept of value is prominent in the art, with different tones of lighting depicted on the people, plants m and background.

Well Dang

This is basically my childhood and is right next to the movie theatres in downtown Hayward. I picked this due to the nostalgic feeling I have when visiting this place. No matter what this type of art really gives me the old vibes from back then and seeing how the theaters were in the past really kept an open mind for me back then. I would go near this play all the time and see how fascinating it was just to see a wall built like there were shops in front.
I went to the movie theatres few weeks ago and really looked into this wall and thought about all the memories I had with my parents and friends. Nostalgia is a really strong form of art and that's something I would like to focus on. Sadly through research, I couldn't find the artist for this piece.
-Matthew Vicencio

Justine Ocampo

Social Movement referenced by the artwork: Indigenous peoples movement

This mural showcases the history of the city of Hayward throughout different time periods, and it all starts with recognition of the Indigenous people of the Ohlone tribe.

Growing up in Hayward I have passed by this mural a plethora of times. During high school I would walk past this mural everyday walking to and from school. It has so many cool little details along the mural in the film that stretches along the painting and everytime I walk passed I am mesmerized by the different aspects. It showcases Hayward then and now. It shows the history of the city and how it has grown over time. It is cool being able to recognize many of the businesses that are showcased. It brings me a strong sense of community. Everything is connected, and this is where I am from.

Artistic Features:

Use of space: This mural is along a long trapezoid shaped wall. The artist uses up all of the space and the painting flows perfectly with the shape of the wall. It starts with the straw canoe on one side making use of the short narrow space, and grows to showcase more larger images then shrinks down again with the bridge going into the distance.

Color: There is a lot of contrasts between the color pallets used in this mural. There is the rust brown color film along the mural that contrasts with the black and white images that showcase the past. Then there is a pop of vibrant colors used in the present images. In addition the artist incorporates vibrant colors within the black and white images like the cherry red tomatos in the black and white factory.

Form: Within the mural there are several images encased in flat rectangles however the three dimensional objects that flow between the images give the illusion that it is popping out the pictures.

I love the natural forms that the artist chose with the flowers, and the little facial expressions in the middle. I love the 3D effect that the words have, symbolizing the importance. Even though the flowers are beautiful, the focal point is the message. I couldn't find the artist's name or mural's name. Rich people should be taxed too, because think about equity vs equality in schools. Even though the district is the same, the poor neighborhoods don't get the same level of materials that rich neighborhoods get. Students deserve an equal education no matter where they live.

Moriah Powers

The mural I chose is one that I saw nearly every day for four years, those four years being the four years that I was in high school. The mural depicts Cesar Chavez as well as several farm workers striking for better working conditions and fair wages. This mural has been at my old high school for as long as I can remember and every day that I walked past it, I would be reminded of all of the good that Cesar Chavez stood for. Cesar Chavez was a big part of several social movements, though he is most well known for being a Civil Rights activist and an American labor leader, having co-founded the National Farm Workers Association which would later go on to merge with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers labor Union. Cesar Chavez and everything that he stood for, especially in regards to the work he did for farm workers, was something that always stuck out to me while learning about various social movements in school and outside. Farm workers deserve so much more than they get, especially because without them we wouldn't be able to sustain ourselves as easily as we can. They are the unsung heroes of our societies and communities and without farm workers we would be far worse off.

Some of the biggest artistic features that I noticed while looking at the mural are the colors, shape, space, and texture. The contrasting colors of warm on one side and cool on the other side show a progression of the hard times during the strike to a time where actions are being taken and while not everything is going to be solved, progress is being made. The various shapes throughout the mural as well stick out to me, especially in the prominence of rectangles and squares seen in the various signs that the farm workers are holding while striking. I feel as though Chavez's head as well on the far right side is a large focal point and the size and shape of it allows for the attention to be drawn to it. The use of space is something else that I noticed due to the fact that there is not much blank space except for where the sky is on the left side. That tells me that everything in this mural is important and demands attention be drawn to it. The last thing that I noticed was the texture of the sky and the fields throughout. The textures to me, go hand in hand with the use of space to draw a person's eye to a specific part of the mural.
- Emilie Martinez

Alex Cazares-Immigration-The main theme of the artwork is that monarch butterflies such as the ones shown can migrate without borders. Subtly addressing a serious issue with lighthearted imagery. This 3D mural illustrates raised and dimensional butterflies in flight, with an idyllic blue sky and gentle rolling green hill backdrop. Composition is slightly center weighted to allow for the feeling of being in flight.

The social movement that is represented in this mural is for gang violence and Children's Rights Movement. The man in the mural, his name is Nipsey Hussle. He is an activist, rapper and a store owner, just to name a few that he's known for. He passed away and this was made in remembrance of him and his work he did for the community. Knowing what happened and getting more educated about who Nipsey is. I can say that his death affects me. It shows me what it looks like to leave a legacy behind. It also shows me how impactful one person can be to a community. Three artistic features used in the artwork that I find interesting is the rhythm of the pictures. The way the focal point is moving across the wall. I also think that the way that the artist faded out and zoomed in on Nipsey as he moves across the wall give the art piece an emotional expression. This technique allows me to perceive Nipsey as leaving, because he is fading away. The last thing that I enjoyed on this art piece is the texture throughout the painting. I would label the texture as a galaxy. I think this also helps with the emotional expression. It makes me think to be as open minded as the galaxy or be as peaceful as a galaxy, assuming that space is calm and quiet.
