We discussed several location options for the garden. Big cities such as Sydney and Melbourne have the highest numbers of homeless but also the greatest availability of existing services. In researching statistics on homelessness, it appears that most 'homelessness' in rural communities is not rough sleepers but those couch surfing or living in overcrowded housing and while these people ARE in need they are less at risk and small in number. We agreed that the best location would be Campbelltown, NSW. Cambelltown is a large town with a high population that in recent years has had a significant increase in homelessness and poverty. We felt this provided the best opportunity to help and was an area of greatest need that is easily accessible from surrounding areas.

Getting the elderly involved in the community is a great way to give them purpose and meaning. They often suffer from depression, feeling unwanted and no longer useful. Activities that make them feel they are needed and providing a valuable contribution can be life changing for many. Let's not forget that the elderly have a lot of wisdom to pass on and make great mentors for young people. Different levels of ability need to be considered when dealing with the elderly. As Natasha has previously posted, residents of local retirement villages can play a big part in garden maintenance and doing some knitting and art for the garden. Many nursing home residents are also capable of helping with art projects and knitting. Some may not be able to get to the garden but may enjoy being able to raise and pot seedlings at their facility to be brought to the garden. Facility managers and lifestyle staff may have other ideas on how their residents can contribute. Meetings should be sought with management of local aged care facilities to assess interest and plan how we can work together to help both the elderly and vulnerable people in Campbelltown.

Key points for creating texts for the elderly:

Keep it simple

No distractions

Big bold text

Simple graphics

Appeal to their want to be useful

Elderly people, more often than not, have poor vision. Posters that a busy or overwhelmed with colour are difficult for them to see. They may only see a pretty artwork and not realise there are words on it. Bold text, big font, strong contrast will make your message easy to see. I have worked with the elderly for 15 years and I have seen the depression and loneliness that haunts so many of them. They no longer feel USEFUL. They feel UNWANTED. They feel like a BURDEN.
When you give them PURPOSE you give them LIFE. They are proud people who just want to feel useful and needed and part of the community. The example below is not only easy for them to see (and appeals to a skill many enjoy in retirement, gardening) it appeals to their want to be useful. "WE NEED YOUR HELP" we need them. "VOLUNTEERS" we need YOU.
It gets attention, appeals to an interest and doesn't overwhelm them with detail. The elderly are vary rarely engaged in social media, their carers are and will access any details that way but with limited mobility, the elderly rely on facilities to take them places. If they know they can get on a safe bus with their friends they will make the trip. Activities Officers in villages are their point of call who will have all the plans made for them
