Today's work should be completed in groups. The tasks set are the following; Write two case studies concerning child abuse. In each case study you will need to suggest a method in which professionals can work in partnership to reduce child abuse. You will need to explain a type of child abuse that the child is being subjected to in each case study and the indicators of the abuse. You also need to consider if there are any ethical dilemmas involved in each of the case studies and how you might resolve potential ethical dilemmas. In addition, you need to describe how equality and rights can be promoted within each case study. Furthermore, you need to describe how a professional would intervene in the situation. You need to apply a piece of legislation to each case study and give an overview of the legislation which is relevant to each case study. You have 30 minutes to complete each case study

Case Study:
A child turns up to school everyday with very low hygiene levels. The child is presented with a scruffy school uniform and holes in their shoe. The child immediately stands out from the rest and is a target for bullies. The child comes to school everyday looking weaker from the lack of nutrition. Most times the child is giving off bad odour smells from not washing themselves. These are all signs a child is being neglected back home.
Neglect is where the person that’s meant to look after/care for a person fails to do so, and it could be because they don’t want to care for the individual anymore or they’re physically unable to care for them so they leave their duties. A typical sign of neglect is that the person has no social skills, they’re very skinny and always dirty this is due to the fact that they’ve been left without any sort of mature care and cannot teach themselves how to do basic things like cleaning themselves, eating well and interacting with others.

Case Study 2:
Anna is seven years old and recently her teacher miss Lock has been becoming suspicious of. Her recent change in behaviour and marks on her body . So she decided to talk to Anna about the marks and bruises on her body and Anna. Discloses to her that her mum has been hitting her as a form of punishment . Miss Lock then informs the head teacher who then contacts social service because this is a form of child abuse.
Physical abuse is an intentional act of inflicting injury or pain to another person or animal. There could be more than one signs that physical abuse on a child has occurred, for example, symptoms of physical abuse could be bruising, scarring, burn marks or cuts. But these could just be a result of a clumsy child, so you must look for other factors like breathing problems, vomiting, drowsiness. This may suggest that the child has been drowned on multiple occasions and the vomiting could be a result of poisoning, so you must look out for those factors as well as the internal factors.

First case study - In school a teacher has noticed that Alex has been neglected. This is because Alex isn't eating at school and is extremely tired. The teacher has spoken to the schools safeguarding officers and told them Alex is neglected and malnourished. The safeguarding officers took action and sent out social workers to their home to access the situation.

Children and Young Persons Act 1933

The Children and Young Persons Act 1933 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consolidated all existing child protection legislation for England and Wales into one act. It was preceded by the Children and Young Persons Act 1920 and the Children Act 1908.

Amber was sexually abused when she was very young by a person in their family. When she would go to school she would often wear very long clothes that cover most of herself. She would hesitate when a boy would come near her and wouldn't take part in PE. The school has noticed this and has taken action by calling their parents for a meeting to resolve the issue. However, the parents didn't seem to have a good explanation therefore, have taken further action in getting the social workers involved. The social workers have decided to take her and put her in a safe place to ensure her safety.

Type of abuse: Child abuse
Zoe is a victim of physical abuse by her dads new girlfriend. She’s been attending anxious and shows a significant personality and behaviour change. She would be avoiding female teachers and be agitated and display aggressive behaviour towards them. Especially in PE lessons she would try to bunk it and not get changed to avoid exposing her inexplicable physical injuries on her body such as scaldings, burns or scratches. A teacher grew more concerned over time especially when she noticed Zoe was fully clothed on a hot day at school which made her report Zoe's behvaiour to the headteacher. Many professionals in this case involved would have to work in partnership such as the teachers, social workers and the police department and medical professionals of that local area. After talking to teachers, the police and a social workers took Zoe to the hospital for a medical examination to see the causes of injuries. The ethical dilemma would be that children have minimal legal rights therefore they’d need consent from the child’s guardian or parents to medically check her. Zoe’s parents were not complying with them to checking her and were being aggressive. Moreover Zoe’s physical injuries looked severe (burn marks and weak movements of the joints). Therefore the local child services and police can overrule the law of consent as they believe Zoe is at higher risk. Rights of confidentiality: Organisations will not disclose irrelevant information to other health and social care agencies but only the need to know facts they should be aware of to help Zoe. Promoting dignity: Zoe should not be looked down on just because of their mental and physical state but be empowered and treated fairly. Zoe also has the right to be safeguarded from the potential danger and abuse being inflicted on her - putting her in the centre of any decisions made. If Zoe’s parents argue that they want to take their daughter home claiming their parental rights responsibilities the social worker in this case would intervene saying they believe the child will be at more risk going home with them and would have to ask a Judge permission to keep the child safeguarded under another authority or house over night.

Legislation in relation to this case: Health and social care Act 2012
Over view: the legislation targets improving authorities and the quality of their secured when it comes to safeguarding vulnerable individual’s who are in need of their care and support. The CQC was formed under this act and can react to Zoe’s case of abuse and offer investigations and reviews on the service that is provided to her and any relevant strategies the authorities can use to effectively safeguard her.

The first case study:
The teacher noticed a child in her class who used to be so active and happy. She noticed some physical changes in her appearance and in her attitudes, She become more quiet and isolated, she keep crossing her legs and avoiding eyes contact, has bad body language, always uncomfortable near male peers and always wearing buggy clothes.
So one day the student asked her teacher for an advice, is it okay if someone’s touched her bad way is it something normal to happen for a child in her age?The teacher tried to act calm and asked her few questions such as who is he? And how’s often? But with calm manners so she can’t scare the child away.
Therefore, the teacher decided to talk to more students about her for clear information, and then decided to inform the police in direct way. She made sure to tell her student not to tell her parents that she informed her teacher to avoid any abuses consequences. And then the police will directly contact with children social worker and according to children act 2004 the local authorities have the right to take actions in order to protect the child and prevent any further and future harm. the teacher has a straight responsibility of reporting the child abuse directly to the social worker, Especially if it was a major thing such as sexual abuse.
At the same night, social services remove the child from the situation, as they have the duty to ensure the welfare of the child is top priority, and that’s how the equality and right is promoted in this study case.
