What are some concerns about kids learning coding?

One concern with learning coding is that it takes time and it’s a long process of problem-solving and constantly learning new concepts. This can be especially challenging for kids, particularly if they don’t find it interesting at first. As a result, students might become frustrated easily. For instance, just when they think they’ve figured something out, having to learn something new might lower their confidence. Teaching kids coding could also be difficult due to the rapid change in science and technology advancements. What’s relevant today might quickly become outdated, requiring constant updates to curriculum and teaching methods. This can make it hard for educators to keep up, and even harder for students to feel like they’re making lasting progress.

But there are also some concerns. First, many teachers don’t have enough training to effectively teach coding, especially since the curriculum was introduced quickly in some places. This can lead to confusion or frustration in the classroom. Second, coding isn’t easy for everyone. It takes a lot of perseverance and can be mentally draining, so not all kids will enjoy it or want to pursue it long term.

Another argument for students learning to code would be the creative freedom and fun students can have with it. It has been shown that many students enjoy coding. They could use this as a creative outlet and something to express themselves. They can also pick it up as a hobby in their free time. 

One last argument for students learning to code would be the thinking skills they would gain. The knowledge they gain from coding can help them in many other areas of their life. Some of these areas are problem solving skills, computational thinking skills, and professional skills. 

When thinking about teaching students to code, there are some concerns to take into consideration. One concern is that there is too much focus on technical/digital skills. When coding, many of the skills learned are technology based. Some people fear that this is neglecting more traditional skills. 

Another concern with coding is the difference between students' access to technology outside the classroom. Some students may not be able to continue to work on coding when they are not provided with this technology. This is something many people think is unfair and why coding should not be taught in schools.

Hi everyone! I’m Clare, and today I’m going to share a couple of arguments for students learning to code—and a couple of concerns, too.

First, why should students learn to code?

Coding builds problem-solving skills. When children learn to code, they’re practicing critical thinking, sequencing, and persistence—skills that apply far beyond technology.

Coding supports creativity. Kids can use code to create stories, animations, and games, which gives them the chance to be imaginative while learning logical thinking.

Now, some concerns about kids learning coding:

First of all, Screen time overload. In early childhood, especially, there’s a real concern that too much coding might lead to more passive screen time, unless it’s balanced with hands-on and social learning.

Secondly, Equity and access. Not all students have equal access to devices, internet, or tech support at home. That can make coding feel out of reach for some kids if we’re not intentional about inclusivity.

Ultimately, I believe coding can be a powerful tool in early education, when it’s developmentally appropriate and thoughtfully integrated. Thanks for listening!
