The sparrows represent the girls of the sorority. Like the girls, the sparrows are unoriginal, all a copy of the same broken mold with unjust morals. The symbol is first introduced on the morning of rat court, when she is contemplating joining the sorority. They are mostly in the story to give contrast to the beautiful, carefree heather birds. By doing this, the author exemplifies the dullness of the girls in the group.

The symbol, which is heavily tied into that of the heather birds, is concluded when the story ends. But, the last physical mentioning of it is when the author refers to the sorority as an elite flock. This reference shows that the symbol of the sparrows ties in with sorority. When the author mentions this, she alludes the girls to a flock of the same, boring sparrows that Millicent thinks so dully of, turning her previously positive view of the sorority to a rather negative one.
