He’s written many books most of his most famous books are “The Things They Carried”, “Going After Cacciato.” The Vietnam war started in 1954 and ended in 1975. The main reason the U.S pulled out of the Vietnam war was because not every one wanted to fight. Many protest started to happen and many of the soldiers were people that didn’t want to be there or know why we were fighting in the war.

I learned that Tim O’Brien was in the Vietnam war and that he has spent a lot of time thinking about how the war effected him and the people around him. He was born and raised in Minnesota and went to amacalester college where he studied Political Science. He is now 71 years old and has won multiple National Book Awards for two of his books. I also learned that while he was in the Vietnam war he was awarded the Purple Heart, which is awarded to an injured soldier. The last thing I learned is that he is married and has two children with his wife.

Reading about how writing stories and articles saved Tim O'Brian's life makes me question why it saved his life. Is it because he wants to live to keep making stories, to satisfy his readers, or because writing is his life purpose? Did he reach the climax of his life, or did he come to a realization? It makes me think about my favorite writer, Stephen King, because I wonder what he sees in his own writing. To me, one of the most satisfying things is writing a good story; there is so much pride and appreciation for use of words and imagination.

Reading his stories and how they changed his life in a physical way, not just fighting in a war that was very violent and long but, they impacted him and his fellow members around his as well. The influence of his articles had lots of effects and thoughts on people left behind. He wrote a book called "if I die in combat, box me up and ship me home." As for the Vietnam war I learned soldiers who came back, experienced extreme PTSD. The war was very controversial and many believe we went to Vietnam for no reason. the legacy of U.S involvement isn't very good. We lost many many lives and didn't accomplish what we were supposed to.

I learned that when writing a war story, telling the truth isn't always the best choice. War stories aren't moral. Mr. O'Brien claims that when telling stories, the truth sometimes isn't sufficient. He believes that "story-truths" and "happening-truths are better when it comes to telling a story.

Tim O’Brian talks about how he is from Minnesota and he hasn’t been back to Vietnam ever since he worked for the New York Time. What was devastating to me was him saying that he had a girlfriend when he came home from Vietnam but because it was so traumatic over their she had left him. While he was in Vietnam he was award the Purple Heart. Now he has two children and is a professor for writing at a Univeristy in Texas.

From reading these two articles I paid most attention to the way the Vietnam war impacted Tim O'Brian , an author and Vietnam veteran from Minnesota. The war traumatized him, damaging him, mentally. When he went back to Vietnam, the memories flooded into his head and brought him to flashbacks of the horrific event. Then when watching the Vietnam documentary he quoted, "It makes me cry. I was unable to stop crying". This just shows how much the war messed with his emotions.

After reading the two articles that I chose, I learned a lot about the Vietnam War and Tim O'Brien. The Vietnam war was fought between North and South Vietnam, along with the US who supported the south side. The "war" was also not considered a war. There also was never a real winner. Tim O'Brien was a veteran in the war. He published the novel "The Things They Carried" which is about his experience in the "war."

I learned that Tim was born in small town Minnesota and had a political masters degree from macalester college. O'Brien was rewarded the Purple Heart upon his return, and attended anti-war protests. A thing that I learned about the war was how agent orange has effected million of soldiers on both sides as well as civilians. It has caused so many skin disorders and birth defects that nobody talks about.

After reading the two articles, I really enjoyed learning about Tim O’Brien’s views on his own book. One view point that stuck out was Tim did not believe his book on the Vietnam war, was technically a book about war at all. He actually believed his book was was more about life experiences. Another point I thought was interesting, he never intended for highschoolers to read his book. Tim believed the themes of trauma and truth of the war would be considered unappealing. He believed his book would be read by an older audience.

From reading two articles about both Tim O'Brien and the Vietnam War, I learned several interesting facts. Tim is a veteran of the war himself, he had a traumatic experience in Vietnam, which is almost inevitable when being in a war atmosphere, but he was also injured at war. This war specifically killed a large number and was a very strenuous and violent war. He overcame this difficult experience and found many successes, including a Purple Heart award, best selling novels and studying to become a political Science major at Mccalester College.

After the war he had to fight the mental war against suicide. After the war, O’Brien had a job reporting at the Washington Post, and later was a part of a 10 episode documentary about the war. He wrote Going After Cacciato after the war as well. I also learned that there was a lot of debate about the war and there were heavy protests against the war and the US involvement, and there were other issues that went along with it like heavy inflation.
