The teaching styles that your teachers used can influence what engagement looks/sounds like. If you had a teacher that gave more collaborative work, then engaged students would be talking to each other about the lesson. On the flip side, a teacher who likes to lecture would say engagement would look like a student sitting quietly, taking notes.

You might have been raised to expect engage to look silent and still, but that is not the norm or a requirement of attention

It shaped my perception by meeting teachers who clearly wanted to work with students and make engagement fun. The teachers that put the onus on themselves to make it engaging were much more successful than the ones who expect their students to come in and listen to a lecture and create that engagement themselves.

Teachers were primarily concerned with conforming to behavioral norms that they deemed "respectful" and that allowed them to maintain order in the classroom. I was easily able to conform to these expectations, so I embraced them as being valid.

As someone who is neurodivergent, I tend to lose focus on a particular task very easily, and sometimes I let my mind wander until I completely stare off into space. It could also be difficult for me to completely sit still, and I became restless very easily. Other students could have these difficulties with focus, and I want to try and meet with them and make sure they are concentrating.

I was taught that independence is really important so when students are talking to each other outside of designated discussion times, I tend to assume they're unengaged. But really they could be learning from each other

I wonder if the emphasis on polite interaction with students and teachers has made me biased towards how other students engage in class in ways that look "disrespectful" in comparison.

This is based off my perceptions on engagement in my specific public schools, which were heavily focused on children learning to interact with adults respectfully and equally. I felt like this was a positive thing, but I don't know if I should be expecting the same thing from my students. I will also say that our teachers expected us to be engaged and treated us like we were already engaged, which in turn made us feel like they had something important to say.
