The British began wearing red in 1645 when the British army was first formed. An important side note is that they did not wear this color to hide blood but rather to adopt this color as one of their national colors. One stupid thing about this however is that wearing bright red colors was a very easy way to be spotted and killed.

The British soldiers wore bright red uniforms to easily locate deserters and make sure their soldiers did not break ranks. Thus making it more apparent that if they were to desert the military, they would lose their freedom and/or lives.

The British wore red to try to prevent people from deserting the war, by people deserting the British's soldier population would decrease and they would certainly lose the war. By making their soldiers wear bright red it made it easier to find men that tried to desert. They were unable to take off the clothes because of the cold weather they were in so their only option was to wear the bright red uniform.

The British wore red to pose an economic benefit to the army. It would be costly for deserters to just up and about leave, so they made the uniforms bright red to prevent anyone from deserting. The fact that winter was harsh and the deserter to be would not be able to survive the cold without the uniform means that the soldier was essentially forced to wear the uniform. The punishment for desertion was the redaction of your freedom or death. Taking off the uniform to prevent being caught while deserting would mean death for you, but at a later time.
