An important side note is that they did not wear this color to hide blood but rather to adopt this color as one of their national colors. It would be costly for deserters to just up and about leave, so they made the uniforms bright red to prevent anyone from deserting. The fact that winter was harsh and the deserter to be would not be able to survive the cold without the uniform means that the soldier was essentially forced to wear the uniform. The punishment for desertion was the redaction of your freedom or death.   • According to the economic thoughts of David Friedman the British army may have dressed their soldiers in bright red in order to prevent them from wanting to desert their fellow soldiers. Friedman also thought that wearing the bright red uniforms would allow for British generals to better spot those who may have been trying to desert.
