Consider before starting that students might need training in how to build these and creating your own first with some fill in, or allow students to add to a basic map through the unit, could be a way to help them develop this skill.

According to the Center for Teaching, the following concept map strategies can be used as formative assessment:
- Have students map previously assigned readings
- Have students map their small-group discussions of a given topic
- Have students map a summary of a given set of class periods
- Have students map topics that they don’t quite understand or would like to know more about (these maps should be addressed in small- or large-group discussions)
Sources: https://teach.its.uiowa.edu/sites/teach.its.uiowa.edu/files/docs/docs/Assessing_and_Evaluating_Concept_Maps_ed.pdf
http://archive.wceruw.org/cl1/flag/cat/conmap/conmap7.htm
https://www.ncme.org/resources/formative

Or click below to start simple!
